Strut brace fitment.

Postby callum » Mon Sep 27, 2010 1:33 am

I was given a strut brace for my ae92. I was told it was from a levin but I'm not sure which model. The holes on the brace match up but are around 10mm to far apart (strut brace is to long by 10mm). Two questions

What vehicle is this strut brace from?

If I slot the holes on the end brackets so the middle bar can move 5mm at each end. Will the brace still work? The towers will be restricted in there movement inwards toward each other but not outwards away from each other.

You could always get the holes welded up and re-drilled if you know someone with a welder :)

is there any way to adjust the lenght of the strut brace? like is there a threaded section at the ends or in the centre? or is it all welded solid?

Are you just lying it on top of the top hat stud nuts to check length, or are you actually lining it up with the holes in the strut towers? If so, try actually fitting it to one tower then seeing how you go with the other one.

I've found from experience that they can be quite difficult to fit sometimes, especially on older lowered cars.. I would say that chances are it'll be the car itself thats' 10mm out. You could try jacking the car up first!

Yeah it doesn't have any adjustment other than the holes at the top of the strut tower being slotted.
The car has done over 500km and currently has adjustible suspention in it. I had read some where once that you should Jack a car up before you fit a strut brace so I lifted it up but it didn't seem to change much.
I understand how over time the towers would have moved closer together but I'm not sure if forcing the bar on would be a good idea.
