I've had my 1999 Golf GTi for 4 months now and despite what other people have said about it being wallet tightening for parts its actually been on par with every other car I have owned for servicing. That includes a 2.5 twin turbo v6 legnum. In actual fact it has worked out cheaper for its first service with me than both the MR2 and the Trueno 20V I owned.

Don't be put off by people saying they are expensive. Various parts I have priced up have been cheaper than parts for my 1990 toyota starlet even at the special prices I get stuff for

The other bonus is the majority of euros are owned by anal retentive people who stick religiously to maintenance schedules and look after their car really well, rather than some young boyracer who thrashes the tits off their Jappa then tries to sell it as a mint car bro

The Legnum I had was 2 years older than my Golf yet it rattled, steering felt loose, all the cup holders were broken, majority of the plastic latches were broken and the drivers seat was ripped. The Golf looks and feels like it was just driven off the lot and its 11 years old.

comparing one of the shittiest cars to ever come out of japan (legnum) to VWs best seller is hardly apples for apples though is it :D

the golf is not a terrible option, pretty well supported in NZ now. would still rather have a corolla

oh and in my experience euro owners are as lazy and dirty as the rest of us :P

I hardly see how a legnum VR4 is one of the shittiest cars to come out of Japan. Sorry it isn't a toyota, but I did also compare it to 3 toyota's one model of which the majority of people on here get wet for

When I went out looking for a new car I wasn't even considering getting a Euro. I looked at Fielders, Torneo's, Corolla's etc but none of them compared to the Golf value or build wise.

I'm not trying to say Euro owners are better than everyone else, I'm simply saying they have the spare change lying around to have their cars serviced regularly and to look after them, be it by a valet or by their own hand 8)

Proof to back up Euro owners have more disposable coin that is spent on servicing of their cars?

Sounds like a sales pitch to me

Hands up how many toyota/jappa owners on this forum have the original service manual with each and every service ticked off at the appropriate intervals by a workshop.

And no not a sales pitch, I don't care what other people drive, hell I own a toyota all be it a broken one (so no toyota's dont "go forever"). Just giving this person a first hand idea of what owning a euro is like since people were so quick to shoot them down because "they are expensive to service".

Right I'm off to hit the salesman up for the box of cereal I apparently paid for when I bought my euro

Its not really an issue with toyota/jappas if they miss a service or 2, But with a euro if the servicing schedule isn't up to date then be prepared to empty your wallet

How old/cheap are you looking at/for? We just sold our STI and bought a P11 Nissan Primera, Love it, has a fantastic chassis for a large boat, seems to sit flatter around the windies better than the STI, not as much go but the SR20 engine has good everyday use torque with ok power

Stupidest thing I've ever heard. I spose you have proof of this? I work on both on a daily basis and it sounds to me like you're talking out of your ass tbh. Most cars have a maintenance schedule that requires an oil and filter change every 10-15000 kms or once a year - whichever comes first.

So what you're saying is that if you own a Toyota/Jappa you can get away with missing a year or two and only service your car once every 3 years/45000kms without any consequences?

Yep, that is how many kiwis do it (and Japanese), although if you do it regularly then you will get sludge and other problems.

Regularly serviced japanese car is a bit rarity in NZ, where people buy it to keep it only for 1 or 2 years and sell it before they get any problems because of their negligence.

hence I don't place much value on NZ new cars as some people do (it is a cat in a sack be that NZ-new or import). I prefer fresh import of auction grade 4 or higher (where agent had looked under the oil cap).

+1 Sergei. A lot of Kiwi's do neglect their cars. I've noticed it more on Toyotas because of the "Toyota's go forever" mentality. A lot of people take that as an excuse to not care for their cars when in reality any car if properly looked after will last for years and any car if neglected will grenade pretty quickly (hint: Dead 3S society)

Overseas, cars like Lada/Seat/Skoda etc are seen as the reliable choice and they keep driving for decades because people look after them. Whereas over here as soon as you mention anything European people scowl and act like they're the worst thing ever made without remembering that Europeans have been making cars far longer than Asian manufacturers. I love Toyotas as much as anyone else on this forum but get real - there are other cars out there and shock horror: Some of them are actually good.

Sounds like someone has thier period again, please note the  in my previous post.

But yes Ive seen quite a few jappas that seem to have had next to no servicing and are still running, How many Euros could do the same?

Yeah it's that's time of the month where stupid things stand out to me  We get (both European and Japanese) cars coming through work that the old grannys havn't serviced for years and we're all amazed that they still run.

Internally most engines are the same - they have bearings and seals made of the same materials etc. Get over the Euro/Jap thing - there isn't that much of a difference between them. They're all cars at the end of the day and the main thing to look out for is how they've been treated.

Except when it comes to build quality! most euros are still behind in that respect! Although I see you try and escape that earlier by mentioning french cars :P
Mate told me recently that her dad bought a Citroen Diesel for his wife... I asked if they are divorced yet

I just got a headache

With build quality it really depends. Asian manufacturers have bad apples too (Hyundai/Ssangyong/Great Wall etc). You get good and bad with any region really.

As I said before, Alfa's are crap as are/were Lancias. The French needn't bother leaving the kitchen - they've made very few cars worthy of being called decent. But at the same time you can't beat the Germans for building solid cars and over engineering everything. Scandinavians are in the same boat.

Like anything there is good and bad. I wouldn't say ALL Euro's are bad because Al has a Clio that drops all the wiring from under the dash every so often just as I wouldn't say ALL Asian cars are bad because crashing a Daihatsu usually results in death.
