Where to get air-con re-gassed?

My Partners 1998 ST215 Caldina has had no air con since I bled the gas to take engine etc out to do the clutch back in December 2008.

Any suggestions for somewhere on the North Shore to get the system re-gassed?

CoolCar. I don't remember what they told me a normal regas costs, just that my car needed new ports retrofitted and it would be $450. You won't have that issue though.

Coolcar wanted $130+gst to regas - but because it's been a while, it'll cost $260incl gst as they'll need to replace some part that

6 years ago I got quoted $350+GST + hidden costs for regassing my old R12 system.

I can't imagine what it'll be like nowdays.

Seems crazy for it to cost $130 to regas. I bet it doesn't take long, even if it takes 30 minutes, and they prolly get the gas for dirt cheap, I can't see why it'd cost that much.

Time wise, it's just plugging the machine into your AC, walking away, then comming back when it's done. But you have to remember, AC companies make very little money in winter, that's why they are so expensive, need enough float in the account to get them throught the cold months.

Yeah surely that price was to convert the system to use the newer gas, since you can't use the old r12 stuff now

I didn't went through with the deal, they didn't even want to say what gas they will recharge it with.

If they do a whole conversion then it seems like a decent deal.

Or they could be using something like Freeze 12 as a replacement, but that crap is useless I've read.

FYI, the equipment to recharge AC systems is about $2k and change, and AC gas is somewhere around $180 for 13kg. Gotta cover the disposal too

why didnt you just unbolt the compressor and sit it to the side when you pulled the engine, rather than being irresponsible and dumping the gas to atmosphere

He makes a good point, there is no need to degas a 3S AC system to remove the engine.

$130 is cheap given the time, materials, overheads, reponsibility, equipment, the dealing with dickheads factor of being in business etc.

If it is so simple to do set up to do it yourself. I have (to some degree) and have enough R12 to last many years. Only way to go.

Just think one day people will be hoarding R134a once it's outlawed too...

there used to be a place in sunny brae road. theres a vtnz with a few shops around it. ones a firestone, ones a smith and smith and ones a aircon place.

not sure if its there anymore but thats another place to get a quote from

I had the works done to mine at CoolCar in Hamilton.

- Regas includes oil as well, $130 is about right.
- New drier costs about $60-80 + fitting
- Convert from R12 to 134a is about $600
- Rebuilding compressor is about $500-$600

Sometimes your R12 compressor will last using R134a, in my case the main body seal went shortly after conversion so needed a rebuild.

All up I think I paid about $1400 to convert and overhaul my whole system.
