Side exit exhaust - Legal?

Postby iOnic » Fri Oct 08, 2010 4:42 pm

Anyone know the legal mumbo-jumbo on having a side exit exhaust? Does the exhaust tailpipe necessarily have to be at the back of the car?

This is for an MR2 and having it exit on either side will mean it doesn't have to be as low as it has to be to exit at the rear as my car has been lowered a bit. Also means I can keep the heat away from my intercooler/oil coolers

As long as I keep it under the noise limit I shouldn't run into any issues should I? Pretty sure it just has to exit behind the rear most opening door/window which is easy when the entire engine is behind them.

You shouldnt, as long as it exits passed the rear most door, and as you stated, it is within the noise limits.

I'm guessing it's going to be pretty noisy

my mates land cruiser exits out the side.

main rules are DB limit and behind rear opening into cabin (vents, windows doors) witch isint hard on a mr2. also its god to exit on the drivers side so you don't fume pedestrians. all tho im sure it doesn't matter as iv seen plenty of muscle cars with an exhaust out each side.
