Tungsten Steel Tap

Postby Lurkin » Fri Oct 08, 2010 7:09 pm

Need to drill out the remainder of a tap (tap like tap and die tap)....

Any ideas on what to use?

might be pretty difficult man the best way will be 2 shatter t and chip it awy because they become pretty brittle once they break . or take it to a machining place and have it spark eroded

Try getting it to back out with a chisel/punch. Will either turn, or shatter.

Depending on what the part is, you can use a 'cobalt' drill bit, (left hand one if pos), and if you can slowly heat up the broken tap and let it cool, it will soften and be easier to drill.

Depending on how experienced you are, might be better to either replace the part (musta been stuffed anyway if you've broken a tap off in it!) or get a pro to do it - as mentioned a spark eroder will do the job nicely.

Buy BT extractors off TM
seller fails to state they have attempted to drill out one of the studs when it has snapped off in them
complain and demand refund or threaten small claims court
seller pays and does not want them back.. funny that..

very annoyed... but cannot bring myself to throw them out...

sits in the garage for three months...

attempt to clean out the bolt without filing it down further with tap = snapped tap...

try to turn it...
try to drill it...
try to dremil it...
try to chip it...

gets hammer...

"smack"

turns out it was the very end of the tap.. takes out a bit of thread but its out! file out the centre, then use the tap to scrap out the bold, picks it up abit - use a pick to get the rest out!!! = free BT extractors....

:P
