Nickel alloy vs recommended platinum spark plugs

Postby 2win2rbo » Sat Oct 09, 2010 4:32 pm

I just found out that after 10s of thousands of ks that I was running nickel alloy NGK spark plugs (BKR6E-11) on my 5SFE. According to the service manual, the minimum recommended spark plug type is platinum (BKR6EP-11 or equivalent). Even auto parts stores told me I should be running the platinum ones (as a minimum). What are the consequences of running the lower grade nickel alloy BKR6E-11s if the recommended ones are platinums?

The only consequence is that you will probably only get 30-40,000kms instead of 100,000, but pay 1/4 of the price.

Nothing wrong with cheap NGK coppers, too many pointy shoe salesmen try and get you to spend big bucks of plugs which you don't need.

Second hand platinums from pick a part.....platinums will outlast the motor.

Wouldnt bother with platinum. Copper works perfectly well...there may be a minor gain with iridium plugs, but cost vs benefit, its entirely not worthwhile.

for a 1/4 of the price, I'd just go with the NGK coppers and the change them on a more regular interval. For turbo application you'll probably find your changing them more often

For a car where it's more difficult to change the spark plugs, like a Subaru I'd go with platinums

Has anyone tried Autolite plugs? What are your insights toward them?
