need new suspensions for 1998 Levin BZR

Postby Tagged » Tue Oct 12, 2010 8:48 pm

Hey guys,

I found out that my rear suspensions makes a hell lot of clunking noise whenever there are passengers at the back, also the front suspensions makes the same noise as well when going over bumps.

I've read the 4AGE and Trueno/Levin Questions thread about Superstruts and what problems they have. However most of them are a bit too deep for me to understand...my knowledge about cars is only at the noobiest level...:(

So...Im thinking of replacing the suspensions sometime in the near future, and I need some advise on a few things;

1. At the lowest cost, what kind of suspension should I get to maintain the same performance level of superstruts?

2. Referring to question 1, where can I get them?

3. Do I need to replace them urgently?

Thanks guys~

Rear suspension could be a number of things.
read this

Front suspension is probably the camber link and lower arm. They usually crap out somewhere between 100,000 and 130,000kms.

1. could use same as what you got from another car.

2. pick a part or local wreckers

3. you dont have to do it urgently, but its better on the safety side of things if you do

You could take it to a mechanic and get them to look at it, to tell you what you need

Do this, preferably someone that specialises in suspension. Get it checked over and see what's wrong with it. Replacing parts just willy nilly will not be the most economical way to fix it.

Also, add your location to your forum profile, so people know where you are. I can recommend a place in chch... but have no idea where you are

@RobertC, thanks for the reply bro! also special thanks for the nice pic. Well study it carefully!

Oh btw, I have seen the post about the other guys clunking rear suspension. However I didnt look at it in depth as he said they werent surperstruts, thought it would be quite different. But will have a look into it again :) cheers!

Thanks! Thought it would be good to have a mech look into it as well.

Couple of friends did told me about buying another set of supersturts from wreckers too, but they also told me that its a risk as theres no way to tell if the parts I bought are good or not....so um...is that rele so? or is there actually some way to tell the good from the bad? thanks~

http://yellow.co.nz/companies/Springs/C ... _1541.html

Go see them and see if they still do the suspension checks for like $15. Or explain the noises etc and see what they reckon.

I can give you a hand if you want to fix anything yourself and want to learn something. Just not for a couple weeks.

your superstrut making noise has nothing to do with new shocks. he means new suspension arm from toyota. very common thing to replace with superstrut.

if you want to go the whole 9 yards and replace shocks/springs also then yes TGP is the best product for you.

searching other threads and asking questions is the best place to start you will learn a lot by reading other peoples mistakes/problems as there are some very knowledgable people on this forum, who most of the time will help you out if you ask the right questions.

rule #1 for owning a toyota:
TGP parts are the best for your car. (no aftermarket option even gets close) this applies for almost everything.

Yep will certainly keep that in mind~
Oh and the Trueno you got is awesome! I used to drive a Trueno XZ as well, but sold it and got a BZR as I really wanted a 4AGE, ha~

My suspension was making a couple of horrible noises, I replaced the Lower Arms & Camber Link, and it gor rid of it, but is still made a slight clunking noise over bumps... Turned out that the nut on the top of the drivers shock was slightly loose, tightened it and now she runs clunk free.
