Uh? check the population densities, Melb 1566/km² and Auck 1,227.7/km² That would be at odds with what you are saying since Melbourne has more people per square kilometer. This is an urban figure, maybe Melbourne has a bigger city boundary?

that's because of the awesome tram system around melbourne. It sucks a bit in a car - one way roads, tram only roads, hook turns, crazy australians everywhere, and some awesomely confusing intersections (around the top of Albert park where to go right at an intersection you actually have to turn left at the one before and do a bit of a loop around so you end up going straight through).


The funny thing about Melbourne is that whenever I go there and hang out with people from Melbourne, they don't seem to know their way around the CBD at all (even the ones that live in/near the city)

Yea I suppose its a bit risky. Although after riding into Auckland city on almost a daily basis this year I found drivers to be far more considerate towards and aware of cyclists compared to those in Whangarei.
And if traveling less than ~10km the bike will usually be faster than a car or public transport.

What I hate about cyclist are the ones that ride in two rows on roads like scenic drive. For starters cyclists should not be on the roads like that in first place.

What I hate about cyclist are the ones that ride in two rows on roads like scenic drive. For starters cyclists should not be on the roads like that in first place.

I can beat that. On the way to work there are dedicated bike lanes that follow the main road, as its quite narrow for a 4 lane, yet the bike brigade take up an ENTIRE lane of the main road every morning!!! about 4-5 abreast!!!!

the temptation to play tenpin bowling with their arses and my car is very tempting!!!

Because they travel fairly slow, while cars travel fairly fast, in many places there is not enough space for 2 cars and a bicycle.

Going around the corner in a car (at recommended speed) and encountering two cyclist taking the whole road and being almost stopped can be very dangerous.


To be honest I don't care about their hill training if they put themselves and other people at risk.

Many of them are total assholes and don't care if they block the traffic.
I have seen too many not riding in the bike lanes.

this problem is not just limited to auckland, cycists in hawkes bay have a tendancy to ride on the narrow winding country roads i travel quite often. is a bit concerning when your doing 100km/h and come across a pack of cyclists taking up the whole road around a blind corner.

i give them the finger as i 'hoon' past.

Yeah I really don't get those kind of cyclists.
I ride my bike on the road quite a bit.
And I tell you one thing, I do my best to stay the **** out of the way of those mush faster, much harder lumps of steel/plastic...

it's simple. Obey the road rules.
PArt of which is slower moving vehicles are required to to their best to not impede faster flowing traffic.
