Whats the deal with certs? im looking at a ae92 fx 4 door thats had a BT transplant. Still has drum rear, will i need to swap to fxgt front and rear brakes? What sort of other things would it be likely to need for cert?

swap over some decent brakes from a newer fxgt or levin and you should be able to get away with it. technically its a bit of a grey area but there has got plenty of 20V's in ae92's that get warrants fine without a cert.

but i would suggest changing drums for piece of mind. also look at twinpot fronts :)

While certainly not ideal, the standard brakes should be fine for cert, as long as they're in good order. I would probably just recommend giving them a decent check over. Brake fluid change & new pads wouldn't hurt either.
Nothing wrong with Drum brakes, no real need to change them if they're in good shape

You need a cert.

If you're talking a four door "FX" I'm guessing 5A power 1500cc ... now you're 1600cc and plenty more power.

No cert and a crash means your insurance is fuxxored if you want to claim on it. Means your WOF isn't worth the paper it is written on. If you get pulled over in a boy racer raid, there's a good chance you might get done.

Ditto your car being built with drums, and changing to discs.

Doesn't matter a damn what other cars made by Toyota came out with. What did *your* car sitting in front of you, with that specific chassis # come out with ...

Having all the factory parts available in another damn near identical Toyota should mean you can bolt on everything with no fabrication, and cert will be walk in the park.

I think he's just asking if he will need discs over drums for cert, not if he needs cert :)

As for the braking, most is biased to the front, so good pads up front should help towards a cert. I wouldn't swap out the drums unless you plan to give it a hard time / track time as they should do fine. Weight wise the car will be about the same as factory, so if they worked fine standard, they will still work fine with a blacktop.

don't they just do a road test for the brakes?
it has to stop 3 or 5 times from 100kph within a certain time frame, depends on whats been done. without getting any noticeable fade or anything else going wrong.

its in the lvv code??

easy enough to test out yourself

i would always get the cert, if i wasnt to have a cert i may aswell not have wof and reg :P.

Yeah it was a 5af, i was just wondering how hard it is to get, and what sort of work i would need to do to get one.

This was the case when I got my cert , so as said as long as your brakes are in good nick , then you should be fine.
Having said that, upgrading the front brakes to what a GT runs isn't a silly idea , and if you do it after you cert the motor , you then need to get the car re-certed .
So do everything you want to do , then cert it 8)
