thirsty for oil?

Postby tim_blair » Wed Nov 03, 2010 10:44 pm

my blacktop drinks alot of oil

i all ways use magnetec 10w40

im geussing that the rings are shot

i have gze pistons to put in it and i will get new rings for them when they go in

does the blacktop have removable/replaceable cylinder sleeves or will i need to get the cylinders honed

also if someone tells me that its more likely to be something else thats drinking all my oil like a gremlin or valve seals or a mini BP oil rig, that they have had experiance with i would like to know
girl: can I trust you?
me: you can trust anything :D

How much oil is it drinking? It could be a combination of rings and valve stem seals, or it could be leaking?

Magnatec is a little too thin for 4AGE's when they get up into the high K's and you would be better off using 15w40 "castrol modern engine" in the silver/grey bottle.

you can try all sorts but unless its costing you the same amount in oil as petrol then i wouldn't worry.. (does happen though)

magnatec is well known for being the drink of choice for 4ages. try changing oils if you want. i was recommended penrite as it is supposed to burn less.

but then again it could be a waste of time if the engine is getting tired.

so by you having gze pistons it means you are churbo charging it?

Magnatec is a horrible oil

Run some penrite, best shit money can buy. They use an extra 10, so yeah it's a bit thicker but it will save you running a bearing or something

The problem's most likely because you have a black top...

Fairly common - I wouldn't worry about it too much (depending on what you mean by 'a lot').

My old blacktop would need topping up every 1,500 - 2,000kms (to take it from L on the dipstick to F); also using magnatec.
The harder I drove it, the quicker it went through oil, and it did that from 120kms when I bought it, to 190kms when I sold it.

your crazy if your not running at least a 15w-40 in an oldish blacktop.
my last one was so bad i was running 20w-50 haha, they don't die if you keep the oil topped up

ive had 3 ae101 truenos now, and all 3 of them for some reason started using a shitload of oil the week they each ticked over to 194000km, then after a few weeks all 3 of them went back to normal again, out of curiosity has anyone else found this?
The four seasons in Australia consist of "$&#$% it's hot", "Can you believe how $&#$% hot it is?", "I won't be in today because it is too $&#$% hot" and "Yes, the dinner plate size spiders come inside to escape from the heat."

Tried and tested?

I know people who have put that in they're car around puke and had it was literally baked to the engine. That was in a turbo application, I've also used it in my car and it turned to shit after 2000kms~. Oil pressure also was very low in comparison

Yeah it might be ok in your grandmas car, but not what you should be using in a blacktop that probably gets revved hard and is burning oil.

My grandma has been thrashing her blacktop for the last 7 years with Magnatec.

Castrol make oils more suited for racing, so using an oil not designed for it then saying it doesn't suit?

LOL

my old blacktop burnt oil when i got it at 140,000km and it still burnt the same amount of oil 3 years later at 240,000km when the car got binned

used about a litre and a half every 5000km - mind you it did say hello to the redline nearly all day every day so i wasn't going easy on it

although the castrol ads for their oils are cringe worthy - like the one where the 2 mustangs are having a tug war and the mustang running regular oil and not CASTROL EDGE SUPER SYNTHETIC OIL suddenly pops a radiator hose and "THAT WOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED IF IT WAS RUNNING CASTROL EDGE SUPER SYNTHETIC OIL!"

haha yeah - id change it anyway as on fresh oil it wouldn't burn any oil and the oil would stay perfectly clean until 1000km into it - the moment it went 1001km the oil turned black and would start burning oil

it did it the whole 100,000km i drive it

funny thing was the day before the car got binned i got the 5000km old oil checked on a fancy analyzer and the guy shit himself and said "CHANGE THAT OIL NOW"! and the day i change the oil using expensive oil and a awesome filter the car gets written off - the oil had less than 60km on it and was still good LOL

since then the 3sge celica of mine uses about a litre every 1000km - you can actually see a puff of blue out the back when you give it guff 8O

a mechanic friend of mine doesn't think its necessarily a shot engine - its previous owner did a lot of cold running on cheap oil and thinks it might just need a really hard run on some fresh oil to set it right again - either that or it will run a bearing and throw a rod 8O

in any case im interested to see how it copes - ill change the oil and load it up with heaps of heavy shite like the whole family is going on holiday and thrash it out to Dunedin or Alexandra or something - if it goes better ill be happy - if it blows up it would have done it at some stage anyway so id rather it happen then lol

At 284,000kms my black top eats around a litre every 1,000kms. Still goes fine. Although I don't rev it hard any more as I'm afraid I'll run a bearing.

In your sw20?

-Valvoline Syn Power Fully Synthetic 5w-40
-Nulon 10w-40 Hi Flo fully synthetic

Those are the two I've tested and work best. I just don't use them because they're quite expensive $70 and I change my oil quite frequently so I use the penrite

I'd say they're worn without guessing if you'd written that there are no leaks AND how much is it using per Km, NOT per day/week/month.

Can't say I've had any issues with my bp-ze (Maz Infini), 4age (BZ Touring) or 3sgte (Caldina GTT). Certainly no expert on the subject though.

Tried a few differet oils (such as valvoline synthetic), but keep coming back to Magnatec.
