Wheel Question

Postby loudstealthGT-Four » Fri Nov 12, 2010 10:55 pm

Ok so ive bought some mags, test fitted them on my car and on the back they are quite close to the shock

Image

so theres about 9mm between the wheel and the shock?

so what i was wondering was, is that too close?

I know it also depends on what size tyre i run, but if i was to run say 205/45 17, would I get enough tyre roll for the tyre to rub on the shock (if i was to take it to the track and give it a thrash)

Thanks Tyler

Edit: mags are 17x7 so 205's would be roughly flush with the edge of the mag

That's safe. My tyres run much closer to the strut / spring seat on the race car and haven't touched.

I normally run with a 5mm gap minimum - the only thing moving in this case is the tyre, so it's unlikely it'll rub.

What's the clearance like on the other side?

my trueno had just on 1.5mm gap with my 18s on, no problems

1.5mm gap haha 8O I thought ~5-10mm was close. But as has been said, it will be sweet so long as the tyre isn't wider than the rim. Which is possible depending on the tyre side wall make up, some have extra width to protect the rim.

yeah i thought it was rubbing originally but i could slide a piece of paper between the strut and the tire :D

Other side? other side of the mag? theres heaps of room, my car is a wide body gt-four.

9mm? I can fit a friggin truck in there. I think I'm sitting on the thickness of a steel ruler for my 18's.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Why not get wheels the right size/offset instead? A 205 on a 7" rim will bulge a little but for a 7" rim to be sitting that close in the offset must be way wrong. I presume they are Subaru wheels?

yes offset is wrong, standard offset is 39p, and these mags are 48p

bought these mags off trade me, for $100, two off them have dent in the outer rim, but Im going to get them straightened and then powder coated.

Was just wondering if they were going to fit, not to worried if they don't, ill just sell them and hopefully make some money :)

Is the camber set correctly for the rear wheels?

As the camber (negative) increases the rim will get closer to the strut.

depends on your style but tbh as long as what you've modified is safe and your not attracting the wrong kind of attnetion from the police then i don't see any harm in it. but of course if you have insurance it nulifies that too.
this is just my opinion on the matter.

i got pulled over for the first time ever the other week after 2 years of having my 'boyracer' car after doing a dodgy right hand turn where i shouldn't of and a little bit of over-zelous accerlation with no cert for any of my mods; seats, no rear seat, coilovers, brake swap, engine swap etc etc and didn't get any fine whatsoever. now this is probably the exception but i believe if you aren't all macho to the cops and be personable then they won't take a closer look.

surely 10mmm of spacing isn't going to attact any attention?!?

**don't take this as gospel or go OT with this thread please, its just my experience with the matter**

Tyres can flex a lot, but fortunately they usually flex at the bottom, rather than the top   (although if you hit really decent lateral forces, the whole thing does start shifting a bit)
