the ae d1 mule mentioned is pretty damn fast too. light weight means you dont need a stupid powerful motor

but if you want cheap power the sr is definitely the best option i say. beams needs a fair bit of work to turbo and 3s dont do rwd easy

but yeah 1uz or 13b if it was me

i think dollar for dollar it would be cheaper to get the 3t in there making 250hp than the sr simply because itl bolt in.3t with 2t head bigger turbo etc

but then again a 4age bolts in as well so 4agte...

so basically:

3T - Old ( but heaps are running them in USA / puerto rico etc with impressive numbers, i know randy from brdracing in USA who can supply all aftermarket parts for 3t for cheap, but is it worth the hassle?)

3sge beams - Sweet conversion but expensive to reach the power i want

1UZ - im not that into V8s

13b - too expensive to maintain and build but always wanted one

SR- good power of the shelf and cheap aftermarket bolt ons but i give my mate with a s13 / s15 transplant a lot of shit so can you imagine his smile when i rock up with a SR under the bonnet :lol: would love to kick his ass one the track with a toyota motor.

This is the list of gear i can get for my 3t motor that is already in the car to make it reliable and quick

If your seriously considering going down the beams 3sge route talk to Dave (romanv) as he put one in his aa60 carina an he even used the 6 speed box. Why not put in a 1jz or 2jz engine? surely these would be easy enough to get your required power output without extensive mods?

The 2jz i think be a bit of an overkill. heavy , powerful, sht load of torque.

If you know anyone who can chuck one in il do it because 3sgte is cheaper to buy then a SR, but then i need a W series gearbox etc, I have asked a couple of guys and they are not wanting to do the 3sgte conversion but will happly put in anything else. The whole having the 3S on an angle etc because of oil and stuff would be a nightmare but would definitely put a smile on my face :twisted:

It's stupidly easy in terms of mounting it in there, get the engine mounts and crossmember from a 1S powered carina or corona and it'll bolt straight in.

Factory gearbox mounts for a W5* too, bolts right in.

Kinloud has got a 3SGE in his carina race car, but is swapping over to a 4AGTE setup.

So he might be keen to sell the bits he's used/made to stand the engine upright perhaps?

Or you could do it truenotch style and leave the engine leaned over, possibly lower centre of gravity that way!

The gen3 block is exactly the same as a beams and the oil galleries are identical - I'm going to use a beams head on a Gen3 block soon. That one above is stood up with the standard sump and it has been running with 300kw for a long time... Even did a race season like that. All Fraser do is make a slightly different lower sump bowl to counter any surge issues, and they have a reputation for building reliable 3SGE's.


It's gen2 and below that have issues.

What about that extra bulge in the side of the block, with that extra little hole in it?

Think it feeds the VVTI, but probably doesnt matter since you're not using it.

Part #2 on this page blocks the hole

Was referring to the fact that they're fine to stand up, but you would be right about the hole (you're normally right about those things).

3S is starting to sound more and more better. So Fraser are the guys to speak to about my transplant?

I'm using a 3S and W55 gearbox in the AE86 - it's easy. A 1C bellhousing fits without modification and puts the starter on the exhaust side.


3TGTE is a waste of time... Their ports are like a 4K.

The altezza motor is easier to actually fit into the car, but a redtop is a billion times easier to set up with wiring and fueling etc.

I used the altezza 6 speed box/flywheel/clutch.

Think there's a problem with the starter being on the other side of the engine, with W series box S bellhousings, unless you custom make extractors.

There's definitely easier and more cost effective swaps than a 3S though I reckon. I reckon they're sweet, but a lot of other people have had a 'mare of a time trying to get altezza engines working in transplants, or using earlier motors and making them fit.

If you're after bang for buck, 1JZGTE is prety hard to argue with!

Garage slipway guys would probably be keen to do a 1JZGTE swap into your car, they're like a 1JZGTE swap factory these days! Done it a million times before.

Well in this case you actually had a hole to plug, but didn't go there 8O .


The Beams extractors don't fit over an exhaust side starter, so that's where it starts to get pricy. You could cut and extend factory beams pipes without too many hassles... With a 3SGTE it wouldn't be an issue as long as there's space for a dump pipe, turbo etc.
