Hand brake light

Looking at a '92 Aristo. Great looking car and all but its got a fault with the hand brake dash light, some times it stays on. What could it be and how hard to fix?

Probably a stupid question, but have you checked the brake fluid level?

The brake warning light on the dash is triggered by either low brake fluid level (can come on when cornering, accelerating, braking if the fluid level is borderline) or the handbrake position sensor itself.

If its intermittant then my vote would be fluid level (but thats piece of piss to check when you look over the car). If not, the sensor shouldn't be too hard to track down and check its bolted securely and has not wear and tear on the wire.

99% of instances where the light comes on at random though is brake fluid level. If by some fluke the fault with this car is the other 1%, I don't imagine it would cost too much to fix (at most either adjustment of the handbrake (foot brake in these yes?) or new sensor from wreckers).

the fluid sensor could be faulty also.

but its a toyota, chances are its on because someone has been $&#$% with it

does it keep making a humming noise? if it's a turbo aristo, they have a nitrogen brake booster, instead of a vacumn one, and they're prone to shitting themselves and running out of gas. i'm not sure if when they get low wether they also trigger the handbrake light. look around on jzs147.com.au for info.

I think he's talking about the "hand brake dash light." If that is the case, it could be because of a faulty sensor usually located under the handbrake lever. It's not too difficult to do.
