94 Hilux Surfs

Postby eskimo » Wed Dec 08, 2010 9:39 pm

Looking at getting a 94 hilux surf, this one in particular

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =339212889

Is there anything in general I should look for with the motor and trans? Ive been told they are fairly solid and reliable motors provided they are maintained

Cheers
Jordon

Would definatly not buy any surf or Hilux with any version of the L series engines, turbo or not.
That looks to be the 1KZTE version which are alright.

Other than that check the Back window and wiper work,
and other than that it's a usual toyota.

1kzs are great imo, they are a pretty sweet wagon overall. have seen a few rusting in the doors, that one looks tidy though and low kms really for the age etc

Yea looks like a good wagon, will be checking for rust in the doors, sils and arches.

L series without turbo are very weak. With turbo they are slightly better, but have major cooling issues that leads to head cracking.

1KZTE also crack heads (due to non-maintenance of the cooling system) but at lot lesser rate. 1KZTE also goes very well.

I had an 88 surf turbo. It was slow as anything, but reliable as. People said "oh they overheat". But when life gives you lemons, say fk the lemons and bail

in what way?? define weak, please

sergei wrote:With turbo they are slightly better, but have major cooling issues that leads to head cracking.
due to insufficient cooling maintenence, and too small exhaust secondry, but any other engine will do the same thing

as above, when fitted to a surf/prado (predominantly auto), both engines have a bad reputation for overheating and head-cracking, but when either is fitted to a manual vehicle, there dosn't seen to be such an issue.
a lot of people expect to be able to tow heavy trailers/caravans/boats, with these vehicles, with auto.............without a decent trans cooler, then wonder why it is overheating?????

PS, would have a 5L over either engine

We had a reasonable late model NZ new Hilux with the 3.0L 5L diesil motor.

Used a tank of gas each way to chch for a race weekend and struggled to get to 100K on the flat.

Enough to put me off them for life.

Hell even the Campervan can beat that for speed and gas mileage.

The 5L may be a bit more reliable than the other L series stuff,
but is so down on power it's just not woth it.
Need a week to get anywhere.

all down to how they were run in. 94 is 1 owner, 300k and pulls out and passes at 100 in 5th, and barely feel the weight of Levin on trailer behind it........... until you need to slow down.
