MA70 Diff Help

Postby Eddy1612 » Tue Dec 07, 2010 11:35 am

I have a 1989 MA70 7MGTE Manual that has a crack in the diff housing.

I was thinking easiest thing would be to swap out the diffs.

So I was wondering what is the code for the diff? What other cars feature the same diff so that it would be easier to find something? How much should I pay second hand for one?

diff code will be on the chassis plate, will be like G325 or something similar
most mk3s and mx83s run the g series diffs, i think some hiluxs share the same diff internals.

But be careful as some mk3s came out with the either faithful F series!

the *a70s all share the same diffs. I have a spare G254 (non-lsd, not 100% on those last numbers)
Don't think my 1g will be destroying diffs any time soon, lol.

How did it crack? I'd try some minute mend on it.

Not all A70's share the same diff, as Matt mentioned some (usually 1G-FE/EU powered) ones have an F-series rear end.

Check the axle code on the firewall plate to confirm the correct ratio for your vehicle if you want to swap an entire diff.

When you say a crack in the housing, are you talking about the actual cast housing or the alloy rear plate? If only the rear plate, probably cheaper/easier to source another one or buy a blown diff to use the plate from that.

Alternatively, pull it out and get it welded up?

Second hand ones are usually worth about $50 if non LSD, $250-300 if LSD. Other diffs are compatible (hilux/cressida) but only internally, not mount wise which doesn't help you as you need the casing, therefore the mount configuration.

Ha, never seen one with a 1geu, learn something new every day.

Blisteringly quick, I bet.

I bought a 1GGEU and A/T from a GA70 which was F series diff.

Am i correct in saying the GZ20-MZ20 soarer would use the same diff housing?? not that they are easier to find than supras.

Ok so I have actually been too lazy to look underneath at where the crack actually is.
I bought it last week without looking at it (kind of stupid but i factored in changing the whole diff).

If it is on the rear plate then it would definitely be worth while sourcing a blown diff.
I am not certain if it is LSD as im not sure if all the the turbos came with LSDs. If it doesnt have one (japanese option or what have you) then that could convince me to swap in a whole new diff as a whole.

Ill check the code in the morning!

On a side note, are g series rear ends fairly straight forward to work on? in comparison I remember taking out a GTS4 rear diff and it took me forever because it had a tonne of bolts and plugs arranged on top of the diff that you couldnt get too without lowering the diff down which couldnt be done without removing the bolts and plugs. My point is ill have about half a day to get it done and i dont want to have issues.
On andother side note, box is being a bit tough changing down, new oil, Castrol Syntrans?
On one other side note, it goes like a beast on steriods!

Once you know what you're doing, diff out and in in under hour and a half (with stops for beer).

Yup and it was a LSD F series aswell but it had been swapped with a shitty 4.3 open.
