Its because Reith doesn't use his brakes hard enough trust me if he does they'll come apart I'll put money on it.

For what it's worth I had a supremely positive experience with Racebrakes and Mintex 1166. I did ~1200 km's worth of pukekohe thrashing on the first set of fronts before I upgraded to twinpot fronts with thicker rotors and larger pad size, bought another pair of fronts to suit and sold the original ones on to a friend with about 2/3rds of the pad left.

He drove them on the street for ~6k and they ended up meeting their demise at a track day when he had a calliper slider seize up and roasted one of them. Rest of the set had loads of meat left after ~1500 track km's and probably 10k of fast road use.

Next set with the twin pots has done a few track days since and look at least 80% intact and even, the rears that I bought with the original set have barely been touched, probably 90% left on those.

They dust up like a bastard but I never had a problem with them coming apart or cracking excessively. Brakes will rip your face off too, good bite and keep consistent. Price was $250 for the fronts, can't recall for the rears. I would probably buy again, possibly after I try out some others for comparison sake.

Should state these were in an EP91 turbo, braking from ~210 at puke at or under the 80-90m mark all day long. Light car but they did get a work out, original 19mm thick rotors didn't like it much.

molex - how long ago did you get the 1166's from 0800 rb? its almost like they had a dud batch at some stage.

Has anyone esle actually had brake temperature paint on their rotors to check what temperature they run?

We put some on mine as when we went to the 6pots and big disc's I wanted to build brake ducts for them,
But was convinced to check the temps first and the temps are spot on with no ducts for the length of Qualifying and races I do.

A better pad will create more heat as they stop better,
to thye point where they are over temp so you need to check.

For something that's going to get driven hard more often than not I'd recommend Carbotech XP8's from ctbrakes.com (or if you're racing with 300+kw and 1100+kg's XP10's front XP8's rear).

They do more road orientated pads too, but I've no experience with them.


why dont you like ebcs? as far as i know they are supposed to be really good, and i am well impressed with how they go on my cars?

First set would have been a couple years ago, second set ~8 months after that? Haven't had either the time or the money since to drive anything worth decent pads. Just about to drop the pads back into my daily driven Levin though.

Pleasure to deal with those guys, happy to answer my (at the time) dumb questions. Learnt a lot since. Get the feeling there's one or two staff there that don't have any patience to go around though.

Well after much thought I have decided to run standard road pads for now and save up for some race pads for when I make it to the track. Please don't let my decision stop the discussion though. This is all very interesting and informative.

RobertC since you've just bought a brand new set of genuine pads and they meet your requirements I'd wait till they're worn out before ya get something else

Yep I've done that I see upwards of 650 degrees C before I had ducting and you are correct now that I'm using the better pads temps are still over that 650 degree mark but I am going alot quicker than I was 4-5 years ago with the use of slicks and all.I have ducting now but I think I have to rethink that as I'm definitely looking for cooler brake temps.

Good move using aset of pads for street and track its probably the best option at the end of the day.

Anyone know who can make brake caliper adapters? I don't wanna order from the states, $500 for 2 pieces of metal with a few holes drilled through it = WTF!

Caliper brackets are very easy and cheap to make in most cases, IF you aren't the first one doing that particular swap on that particular car. The cost come from the experimentation and measuring to make it all work. $500 worth just for brackets and I was very happy with the results for my Corolla.

So my full setup is late KE70 steering arms and lower control arms, RA23 Celica struts, MS65 Crown 5 stud hubs, LS400/Celsior 315 x 28mm discs and alloy 4 pot calipers, a little machining of the hubs, custom caliper brackets and 17x8 41P Blitz 03 wheels with 205/40 tyres.

I ran greens on my street car, and loved them. Never really pushed that car that hard tho.
Thought I'd try their reds on the race car, and the stopping was great, but the wear!!!!
I'd be thru over half the pad in two track weekends. And they started crumbling in the center of the pad.

For the price, (even tho they are twice the price) Endless CCX have been SO much better. Lasted ages, great stopping. No complaints.

Thought I'd drag this thread back.

I just found out what make of pads we put in the MR2 before going to manfield, mintex M1166.
I got them as un-used spares when I purchased the car.
They are crap.
One track day (were santa and I couldn't really push the car, as it was having problems) and they are cooked.

Time for another brake pad change I guess

I would think that EBC Yellow was the only one worth having in their range, althought the friction coefficient seems low. Anyone use them?

Yep Mintex 1166s suck AR*E.Did you find the samething I did when they overheated did chunks melt to the rotor??

Hahahahaha bin them and move on.

I used EBC red stuff ceramics and they lasted around 10 track days over a course of a year on a 4-pot subaru. They lasted well and stopped so good that I bought another set.

Have also had 2 sets of Mintex 1166s and they also were great.

At the moment am using Ferodo DS2000s and they also are doing great.

Yea, I've got 1166 on the rear and the DS2500 (Is that what you meant?) on the front. Great stopping stuff. Work well from cold, but make a lot of dust!
