No need to run in a turbo, just drive it how you want to from the start

things to make sure of when installing a turbo are
Prelude turbo with fresh oil before starting
On cranking and first start hold the compressor wheel so it won't spin to allow plenty of oil to lubricate it before allowing it to spin

or just take the coils off and turn it over to get oil thru the bearings

Even with removing the coils the turbine shaft will spin when cranking,

Even more so on a brand new turbo with no prelube this is enough to cause irreversible damage to the bearings, if not failure from the start,

Filling the bearing cavity with oil before cranking will help prevent this,
I will always stall the compressor wheel untill I know a good oil supply is present,

I have seen on more than one occasion people will remove the oil feed line and start the engine and run until clean oil comes thru,
In the mean time the turbo is spinning and the bearings will 'pick up' and fail with lack of oil, it doesn't matter what brand, I have seen it happen to brand new garrett's,

They wil then curse and swear that the turbo was faulty, when it was there fault.

how exactly do you hold the compressor wheel when cranking?

Yes cranking / starting, but just let it idle if it starts,

hold the compressor wheel or the nut with your fingers,
just get a good grip on it before someone cranks it for you,

Don't jam any thing metal in it to try and hold it as you will more than likely damage it,

Might sound daunting but it is actually very safe

yeah i thought thats what you meant... not really keen to try and hang onto that little nut when it spins at 50000rpm-ish....

can ya just fill the oil line with oil before fitting it and spin the compressor by hand to get oil through it?

crank it with no coils connected. it cant possibly start, and the oil will still get pumped thru.

With my car was idling I could put my finger on it and stop the compressor spinning whenever I want.

You could simply build up oil pressure before you crank the engine. It's considerably more preferable than cranking without spark and fuel.

Whenever I start a fresh engine, or start my race engine after sitting for a while I plug up an external oil res (or pot). Mine is simply an accusump that I prefill, then pressurise with straight air. You should build at least 10-20psi of pressure and pre feed all the oil galleries before you turn the crank a single revolution.
The answer is Helmholtz!
