ST 20v tappet noise?

Postby h8wrxs » Thu Dec 30, 2010 2:23 pm

my trueno has started making some god awful noises lately, slowly ticking them off my list as i fix each

one that has me stumped is a really loud tappet sounding noise under acceleration, but sounds alot louder than any of my evos have

but 4ages dont have tappets do they? would this be likely to be the valves/valve springs?

im going to rebuild the whole motor soon anyways but just wondering if its likely to breakdown sooon...

Any valve train noise can not be dependent acceleration or engine load, it's only variable is from the engine's RPM for its frequency.

Is it pinging/pinking/spark knock/detonation? Happens with low octane fuel & abusing the engine by accelerating in 3rd/4th from 2000rpm? Sounds like marbles rattling in a tin can?

ya might describe it like marbles in a tin can.... maybe

it starts around the 2000rpm mark right through to redline

i always run it on at least 95 and quite often run a bottle of octane booster in it at the same time

what do you think its likely to be?, doesnt sound like detonation to me

VVT Pulley. It's very common cause of regular ticking in 20 valves. I don't know what causes the tick or if it causes any damage. From the number of 20 valves I've heard with said tick I'd say it doesnt.
It could also be an injector ticking. But more likely to be VVT pulley.
If it has no rhythm then it's probably detonation.
The answer is Helmholtz!

definitely has rhythm, vvt pulley fits the description in my mind, thanks

will look into it tonight

i find noisy vvt pulley not noticeable in higher rpm when its being actuated. very noticable at idle- sounds like a clattery noise. hard to pin point where noise is coming from because the whole intake cam sounds noisy. almost like injectors are making it. I confirmed by actuating vvt pulley manually at low rpm by earthing the solenoid plug (its earthed by ecu to actuate, dont earth wrong wire!). as soon as vvt solenoid opens.. noise gone. would be interesting to see if modifying the vvt solenoid to pass a little oil at all times would supress the rattle without actuating the cam? just hope oil pressure at idle is good enough for it.
hope you can identify the sound of a bottom end bearing knock. it not uncommon for a thrashed 4age to develop bearing wear.
I replaced the big ends in my silvertop at 263k yet the mains had plenty life left in em.

think i actually rigged up a couple wires straight to battery rather than tampering with original vvt solenoid plug.
Or a volt meter between vvt plug pin and battery negative will identify which wire is which. dont earth the live one :p
