Postby petrolhead » Tue Dec 28, 2010 1:47 pm

Hey guys. Jumped into my car yesterday after putting fuel in to find i was only holding half my key and the other half was still in the ignition barrel! Oh bother. lucky the key still turned the ignition and i could get home.
Anyone got ideas on how to get broken bit out? I was thinking something sticky on the end of the good half and try and stick it to the stuck half. will try get it out tonight.

can try picking it out with a small screw driver or a seal pick would be even better.

if all else fails and you can still turn the key you can actually remove the whole barrel by pressing a small button on the top of the barrel holder(you normally need to take of the column surround) and take the barrel to a locksmith

Try one of those neodymium(really strong) magnets that you get on the end of the aerial/stick/thing used for picking up nuts and bolts that you dropped down that narrow as hole.

I've had to remove half a key before in an AE92.. tried magnets, glue (!), nothing worked because it's damn near impossible to get the broken edge back past the other pins, you'll see what I mean when you have a closer look. I ended up having to remove the lock from the column, and then partially dismantling it so that I could stick something in it from the other side to force it back through.

Done that before with my MR2. You'll be there forever trying to pull it out - they're held in there pretty good.

As someone said before, with Toyotas there is a button on the barrel (once you've removed all the surrounds etc) that releases the entire barrel when pressed with the key turned to ACC. Take it out and take it to a locksmith and they'll get it out + cut a new key for you.

go ta pick a part and get an ignition barrel with key for cheap, install the new barrel, copy the key 2 times so next time you unfortunate enough to have it happen again, you gotta spare. put the spares somewhere safe.

And while you're at pick a part, get the door and boot locks as well. Then you don't need two different keys..... :D
