What car is it? Normally just bend back some locking tabs and loosen/unwind it off the threaded shaft.

As for the locking tab, whats the best tool to bend the new one like that?

Car is an ae101 levin

A small hammer and punch + being gentle :P They do break. Make sure it's as tight as you can get it before you bend the tabs back - the tabs are only to locate it/lock it in one spot, if it's loose it can come past the tabs and then you're in a world of hurt.

I have loctite 263 to pop on the threads - any idea of how long it takes to set? I imagine I will need to fanny about before its satisfactory 'tight'

By the time you've built it all back up and the car is good to go it'll be sweet.

Hmm. very strange. the new nut on the bottom of the tie rod outer is not as think as the one that came off it, and the cotter pin well below the nut, i.e. the cotter pin does not sit in the grooves of the nut. thoughts? brand new from repco, TRW brand.

Have switched it to the one that came off it as whilst showing signs of use, seems perfectly useable. which way to split the cotter pin though? vertically or horizontally around the nut?

And any idea of how to check the alignment 'rangi style'? played with the damn inner boot so much getting it on (will NEVER reuse one again!) not sure if the jam nut for the outer is in the right place?

Yeah just reuse the old nut and ask around for a replacement if it's a bit shagged. Everyone has those lying around. Cotter pin is up to personal preference - I go vertical.

If you go vertical what do you do with the top half?
