if the second guy is replacing the bumpstops, make sure he checks the top hat bearings while he's got the struts out.

Is there any way to check the bearings without taking the struts out?

If they were gone what symptoms would I get?

um, pretty hard to test them properly without taking them out unless they're totally shot (unlikely). If they're worn they can cause exactly what's happening for you, knocking sounds over bumps. Still sounds more like its bottoming out though
