AW11 steering rack boot fitting issues

im doing my steering rack boots this evening.. got the right hand one on after some swearing, but the left hand one does NOT want to fit to the shaft. any ideas/tips?

yup, that did the job. didnt want to resort to that as i figured its meant to be grippy in order to stay on, but i was over it at that point!
