Its about that when idling (check out from about 30 seconds) and unburnt fuel will lead to a leaner mixture read by the oxygen sensor I thought?

It does smell like there is a lot of unburnt fuel passing through the system. Not like it's running rich, but more of an unburnt petrol smell....

The spark, when taking out a plug and earthing it with a jump cable to a good earthing point, doesn't give a very strong spark at all. Which to me sounds like either the coils (all 3??) or the ignitor is giving up the ghost...??

Yeah? Cleanable or? What did you do? How did the engine run?

it would get to about 2500rpm to 3000rpm and it would start to die/splutter

got the wide band on there and it was leaning out bad.

The inside of my tank was all rusty and the pick up all blocked up

Was your fuel pressure good? Could you replicate the fault just by free revving the engine?

free revving didnt show problem, fuel pressure was doing funny things on load. i got a new tank and pick up

Hmmmm. Well free revving for me produces the problem very very noticeably but my fuel pressure is very constant and consistent.

I would sort the spark problem before chasing any other issues. Really sounds like the spark just ain't cutting the mustard.

Good luck mate. I hate these chasing problems type scenarios where it could be a million different things.

The last car that I resurrected after sitting dead for 5 years, fired up first time with old fuel , idled perfect but wouldn't drive. There was only a dribble coming out of the reg at idle. That's why you flow test it.
Swapping the pump fixed it. The pump must have been blocked......still got the old pump, need to pull it to bits to find out the problem so I can fix it or dump it.

But as mentioned, the iffy AFR could be caused by it misfiring and giving funny readings with the oxy sensor.

ah - well the fuel fires out of the FPR with some force! Spray everywhere as it bounced off the bottom of the container I had the hose going into haha.

Yeah a missfire will often read a lean mixture and then I guess if that fuel ignites in the exhaust it would read rich?
