Where to get Roll cage tube from..?

Can you buy roll cage tube other than places like cardwells and, race workshops etc just wondering..

Got quoted for chromolly $800 for only 18m worth from a local shop, i thought that wasa bit expensive.

Any where to getlike mild steel 44.5mm by 2.5 and 38mm tube as that what the specs say.

I think you can get it the mild steel stuff from Steel & Tube. You probably have to buy full lengths, I don't think they will sell you part lengths.
Just make sure its the right stuff. Cold drawn seamless etc etc...

Yeah steel and tube would be your best bet and it's possible Chase auto components MAY be able to get it. They're an exhaust shop but i would imagine they would have access to various types of automotive tube.

the 44mm main hoop tubing you can only get from vulcan steel. there other 44mm tubes you can get but the specs don't line up to what MSNZ want for the cages. its hella expensive as well.

chromoly is always going to be expensive if you go down that route you just have to grin and bear it.

remembering that as of the start of this year the spec required for MSNZ changed.

unless you really know what you are doing in regards to the welding of it, I wouldn't touch Chrome Moly.

Quite happly weld either the steels its part of my job so no worrys there. I just want to get a price comparison of them Both. I will ring the companys you have spoke of.
Yeah as of this year the main hoop has to be 44.5 by 2.5 in mild and the rest can be 38.1 by 2.5. Ive read all the regs etc..

they reckon the weight difference of a full cage in MS vs a full cage in CM is only 7-8kg. the price difference makes for expensive weight loss.
probably cheaper to go to jenny craig and shed 8kg off ya own body (if thats possible)

Haha yeah maybe i should try that but then there might not be anything left. Worth a shot Priced up steel and tube they got prices and reasonable, about 100 per length. Mild steel it is. Hope this is not going to be a f*** up

that'd be right, a few years ago when i built my cage i think i paid $55 a length and that was a fairly mates rates type deal

mmm, local guru is between 1500-1800incl depending on bars and the car obviously. spose if u can weld why not have a go. just watch the angles and as said new reg regarding main hoop size.

most of the hassle of doing it yourself is getting a bender that is suitable also and being able to fill out the MSNZ paperwork regarding how you built it.

just got mine done and yeah its guna cost at least $2000+ for a simple cage. most of it is the materials they are almost half the cost. but TBH i would rather be without $2000 and be safe if i had a big crash then have the extra $2000 cash in my pocket.

Yeath thats been the big problem and wasnt sure where to get before this but found out now vulcan and steel and tube have the approved MSNZ stuff that comes with the paper work both companys retail at around $140-$150 per length after i started this. We deal with steel and tube so can get it about $85-$100+gst depending size.
Mitchell motor sport for a 6 point are about $2700+GST just for a 6 point. Got all the paper work printed off to get it homlogated and getting a bit of a hand from a guy from work that built 3 or so cages before, think im ready to do it now, read all regs and asked questons to the guys at MSNZ

Dave McCahon down here does 'cage kits' for most cars. He has specs from many many cars and can supply a full pre bent kit within a few days normally.

I haven't heard if he is still in business doing that, but have used him for 3+ cages in the past and have all been really good, come pre bent, with any additional bars, footing plates + all the MSNZ spec's for paperwork, and reasonably priced. He is/was a MSNZ inspector so knows what is required.

That then saves all the hassle of measuring and bending

+1 for Dave, have installed a few of his cages, and a very good value for money (especially knowing his bends are legal).
just get the basic 6 point kit off him and add any extra straight braces/ diagonals etc to suit
