No bost boss - non toyota

Postby eskimo » Wed Feb 02, 2011 11:20 am

This isnt toyota related but thought id pick ya brains for idea's

A mate of mine bought an evo 7, she has had it the last week and she finally let me take it for a drive

When I did I realised it wasnt boosting over 3PSI, from what I can find on the net they should at least run 7-8PSI in facotry trim

It is factory apart from a K&N intake(POD ect) & warlboro 255lhr fuel pump(as mitsi wanted moon beans for the genuine one) it has only done 103,000kms

Ive cheacked for boost leaks and cant find a single one any where.Does any one know what could be causing this or what else I should check?

Cheers
Jordon

Couple of things come to mind,

Blocked exhaust/cat
boost leak
shagged turbo
wastegate not closing properly

Do they have a 'limp' mode?

Cheers, will check the exhaust and for leaks again. The turbo is seems ok, spins freely and no play in it

have also looked at the wastgate actuator and that doesnt seem to be sticking either.

Dont think its in limp mode.

Maybe it has had a "Woman Driver Detected" error, and wound the boost back?

Just kidding  But it was just such an obvious potential troll moment that I had to make the joke. Please form a queue to the right for throwing rocks at Leon.

un plug vacume line from wastegate, take to 100km area or similar, drive it nicely in 5th and give some gas, watch boost level and see if it goes higher than 3 psi (be careful doesnt go reduculously high)

i thought evos ran 16psi or so standard

nah evos dont run 16psi stock, the wrxs run about that i think though

evos are more like 8-10 i think

freeboosting is fun lol my old one went off the boost gauge at 30psi lol

If they would run 8-10psi they would not go very fast. 2.0 + 8-10psi is ~ 220Hp at the motor.

They run similar boost to WRX STI of the same era.

This is what I thought too, I know my old STi boosted at 16psi and spiked to about 18psi - I would have assumed Evos were the same

i would've guessed 1 bar for a late model EVO, personally, but interwebs seem to indicate stock boost at just over a bar (1.1-1.2).

IIRC stock EVO 7 run 1.2bar+ stock.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

17 psi approx is factory...

does it have a major leak or crack in the cooler pipes? must be slow as $&#$%.

is the gauge giving a faulty reading?

She will be bringing back later tonight so will go over it again for leaks

Is the back end covered in black soot? would indicate if it was running pig rich from an intake leak or something.

Does it take ages to get to 3psi, or does it quickly jump to 3psi then hold there?

Nope, the back end is clean. It takes a wee while to get there but just stays there from then on
