Measure Valve Springs?

Postby cat007 » Mon Feb 07, 2011 5:20 pm

Hey all

Just wondering if there's a way to measure the spring rate etc for some valve springs or if there's someone I can take them to and get them tested/measured?

Cheers

Any head shop will be able to, and I dare say most engine shops will have a valve spring machine

Well... If this is for your 1G try this:

Free length : 43.85mm

Compressed length: add 17.5kg's of weight and the length should equal about 34.7mm.

If however this is not for your 1G please ignore.

Spring squareness 2mm

Yeah it's for the 1G. I just picked up a set from Allen Waye at Performance Springs .com.au and just wanting to compare what the stock ones are like. Apparently these are the same spec as the TRD ones....

I'll try and measure them tomorrow and see how the new ones measure up :)

Most engine reconditioners should have a valvespring tester of some description. From memory performance springs are normally around 75-90 lb's with factory springs closer to 50-60lbs (On seat pressure), but i could have these numbers wrong it's been a while since i've measured some heh.

Apparently these springs have a spec of:

Standard installed height is 1.400.
These springs are 60Lbs @ 1.400 & 160Lbs @ .920. Coil Bind is .820
The spring rate is 208Lbs per inch.

oh no performance springs..
I had this brand, lasted for about 1 year until they ended up being weaker than the stock ones!
4agtepower on here, his lasted not even a month with high lift cams and big valves.

My dad has a valve spring tester, if you go down he will happily test them for you.

Oh really? These are the same ones that Kyle (6boost) used with his 9 second 9,500rpm 1G and they worked well for him....

I guess I'll test them now and in a year's time and see how they're holding up :)

Just out of interest are you planning on looking for more power out of the 1G?

I want to get it up to about 260-270rwkw as they can handle that power output without too much struggle. Plus I love the sound of them when they're over 8,000rpm haha

The engine I'm going to be rebuilding over the coming months (or years haha) will have all the oil gallery work etc done so it can support the higher hp without running bearings.

Sounds similar to what I have done....

Oh I have a spare set of brand new crank thrust bearings, and a pile of valve shims if you get short on bits...
