ae82 wiring short

Postby Mike228 » Wed Feb 09, 2011 10:40 am

So, last night I was out driving my 2 days finished ae82 fx gt with a smallport conversion, the battery appears to have slipped and shorted the positive terminal against the battery tie down clamp. (Then while I was away for half an hour getting my tools and truck a window smashed and my stereo stolen.)

At first it was completely dead, the battery is still putting out around 13v, except when the positive terminal is connected then only 4v, and after some time to cool down a few of the dash lights come on dimly, but that is all. All of the grounding wires are completely fried and most of the relays just make a buzzing sound, but as yet I have not been able to find a blow fuse.

I have checked the 3 fuses attached to the positive terminal, the fuse box beside the battery, and the fuses in the drivers foot well, all have continunity.

Are there any other places that have fuses?

No there arent any other places with fuses. Youve either missed the fuse thats blown or are looking for the wrong problem.

Tried jumper leads or new battery?
13V means nothing. Your battery is probably flat/toast. If battery shorted against body the only fuses would blow are main fuse (Alternator would blow that fuse) and possibly small charge fuse.

Double checked over the fuses, and apprently the way the relays were behaving (making a buzzing noise, flicking open and closed in quick succession) suggests ruined battery also. Connecting a 12v halogen light to it also causes a massive voltage drop, so most certainly is dud.

Made up new wires today, and will chuck a new battery in tommorw, fingers crossed!
