Hub dyno is superior in tuning, I have never doubted that, the ability to hold RPM and taking wheel variables like slippage out of the question.

But I want to know the closest approximation on the power that I have available on my right foot's disposal without taking my engine to a engine dyno. That's why I prefer rolling road dyno to "see" my end result.

Sorry Akane if I made it sound like I was trying to say I know more than you do. I was simply suggesting that just because your opinion on something differs to mine doesn't mean that I'll go changing my methods. I get the results that I do because of what I've been taught to do and it seems to work for me. Some people think/do things the same way as me and others (like you) don't. Not a big deal, it's a free world. If what you think/do works for you then power to you. I don't claim to be more knowledgeable than anyone else on any topic. All I'm saying is your opinion isn't the only one - it may be the one that works best for you but it's not the only one. Everyone has different thoughts and methods and ultimately they get much the same results so who really cares how they get there.

I got 450hp at the engine from a CT26, once I'd calculated transmission losses. 8)

So you are saying rolling road is the next best thing to an engine dyno?

Your mum's the next best thing to an engine dyno :P

No but seriously, I can see where Akane is coming from....rolling road dynos do give you a figure at the wheels, which is good for comparing before and after mods. ie bragging rights

Could just use this? http://www.random.org/integers/?num=1&min=80&max=410&col=5&base=10&format=html&rnd=new

A little bit less accurate again than hub dynos, but faster and cheaper.

Akane needs a high reading dyno because his mr2 can't pull the numbers on the track

In my opinion dyno is just another test/experiment.
From scientific point of view, it does not matter what dyno reads, as long as every time you test the result is consistent and repeatable. Rolling road or hub dyno will never replicate road condition nor they intend to.

The purpose of a dyno is to measure before and after changes. When someone tunes an engine there are a lot of changes. Rolling road dynos are not as consistent as hub dynos, hence hub dynos are more suitable for tuning.

As for measuring horse power of an engine consistently - that is purpose of engine dyno. There are just way too many variables to compare vehicle to vehicle unless they are done side by side, on same dyno, same wheels, tyres, gearbox oil etc.

^ Thats exactly right. A rolling road has a definite advantage in the fact that a car can be put on and taken off quicker, that (and price) about all I'd ever agree with being better about them than a hub dyno in terms of use.

Anyway, for some reason I was in the kind of mood that I sunk to debating retarded things.... these things can happen. No idea why, my bad. Whichever moderator is throwing their powers around to further compromise the image of forum users - fair enough, and I'll take my time wasting elsewhere.

All interesting reading hearing everyones points of view.
I've recently had my car tuned on a rolling road dyno.
Whilst down there there was a less than 200kw VL commodore wheelspinning on the dyno, took 3 guys sitting in the boot to make the thing get grip (I blame the open diff) so therefore a Hub dyno would have helped the cause. However they had no problem tuning my car to 250kw without anyone sitting on the back of it as I had decent tyres & an LSD.

There are different Pros and Cons th what Dyno's are used. I personally will be chucking my car on Dyno power's Dyno to see just how bigger difference it makes..
(if the rumors are true, I'll be making 270kw on their dyno without changing the tune)

This as been good reading :) , Well i have been useing torque performance for about 3 years and as for me i have found dave a very good tuner but as for dynos i found torque was the only one that could hold my car and yes there dyno does read low but if your useing the same dyno all the time who cares, and by the way my supra rip was the highest hp car that has been on the dyno.

Hmm... I thought it read high? My stock sw20 read 142kw... 18 year old ct26 and all.

Had my MR2 on Torque Performance's roller dyno. Got 207kw which equated to 109/110mph trap speeds at Meremere. As a comparison Justin's V6 MR2 got the exact same number on Speedtech's Dynapack hub dyno and the same trap speeds at Meremere. Al's MR2 also had similar power to both of the above and he also got similar trap speeds. Sean's MR2 is in the same boat...

Go figure.

Justins v6 mr2 would have more torque but less power to get the same trap speed

Bugger all difference torque wise between a near stock 2GR and a modified 3S - Especially using the same gearbox. Justin's advantage is weight - he's got a light modern engine not an 80's boat anchor.

As Al said, people that dwell on which dyno reads high or which one shows you power at the treads = people who's cars don't stack up at the track so they want something else to brag about.

Sergei's post summed it all up perfectly.
