ECU differences - Gen 3 3S-GE Manual/Auto

Postby EssDub » Wed Feb 23, 2011 11:09 pm

As per title.

We are doing a gen3 conversion on an auto gen2 MR2 and i'm after some info re the ECUs. Will a gen3 NA Manual ECU play ball with an auto transmission (A241E)? or would I need to find a gen3 NA Auto ECU to drop in?

Any differences in the pinouts? I can only find pinouts for the 3SGTE.

Although not much help, but...

AFAIK the PowerFC never made ECU's for any automatic car because the need for an extra logic board / circuit for the automatic transmission.... except toyotas, because toyota have a seperate automagic transmission controller board elsewhere.........

Not much help, but yea

If you take the case off, Toyota ECU's often have the pin names written on the board just behind the plugs. Compare the two and you'll know if they're different.

Going by what he said, he may have a manual one but no auto one. Otherwise i'm sure he would have compared by now

What we have is a Gen2 with an auto trans. A241E stamped on the ECU.

What we want to do is put this gen3 3S-GE into the car, using the SAME transmission using the gen2 ECU to run the engine.

Gathered that - but I'm sure he won't have to break a sweat to find someone here that can take a pic for comparison sake.

Looking at the:
*3 ST202: ATS

I would assume that stood for 'automatic transmission sensor' however on the ECU terminals, it says: 'ATS *2' 'A/C Amplifier' ...so I dont know if thats a mistake or not?

89661 COMPUTER, ENGINE CONTROL
89661-2B802 ST202..ATM..(CV, SS2)
89661-2D500 ST202..ATM..(SS2, SS3)

89661 COMPUTER, ENGINE CONTROL
89661-2B832 ST202..MTM..(CV, SS2)
89661-2D490 ST202..MTM..(SS2, SS3)

They are different part numbers (Going off Toyodiy)

So Im going to say manual. Reasons being it (3sge repair manual) doesn't make any note on the auto camshafts (smaller) or any note about the kick down for the auto.

Those wiring diagrams are for both auto and manual

Look in the top right corner of the first sheet, notice it says

*3: M/T ...
*4: A/T ...

Wires marked *3 are specific to Manual
Wires marked *4 are specific to the auto versions
