After the EQ.....

Wanted to see what everyone else is thinking/doing after the EQ....

I'm in the process of moving back to Chch; started moving back in January. I've since decided to move to Wanaka instead.
I don't feel like I'm abandoning Chch, but I do think alot of people are underestimating the damage, and the work required to get the city running again.
I'm in construction, and I'm putting of my plans to open a branch in Chch for at least 18months, as I believe it will be at least this long before anything happens.

The CCC has been given the boot by central government when it comes to the rebuild. Not sure who is taking it over, but it can't be worse than the CCC.

CCC proved how f$%king useless they are with granting 27 building consents since the September 4th quake.

Did the CCC building inspectors not help inspect houses Al? I have spoken to a lot of builders and basically from what I heard all the inspectors got reassigned to check houses over. As for what the other staff were upto i'm not sure.

What am I doing? Staying put, though sounds like my place will be in the centre of town soon if they do all move out this way If I wanted to move, could I? Not a chance, this year was supposed to be my next big step, that won't be happening now. But i'm not complaining, I could be homeless like many others!

Won't be long before houses are started from the Sept quake, so it will sure take a long time, but it's not like the wheels aren't already turning. A lot of our work has just suddenly stopped due to the quake, but we are run off our feet at the moment and that will only get worse when more houses get under way.

my plans still remain, im going to move back to chch around july, even with everything thats happened i love canterbury

i do know a few people who arent haning around, cant handle the stress in chch anymore


my guess is itll be at least 12 months before chch starts to rebuild, the eqc etc will take forever to get all the houses/buildings inspected

We are staying, although we are still trying to move, nothing to do with the quake, just need more space.

We thought about leaving town for a couple of days after the quake but were scared we wouldnt come back, and I do want to be here. Been here for 11 years now and love it, so no intention of leaving.

i seriously dont get why people are leaving, with the exception of people how have had thier homes destroyed.
If anyone is looking at moving back id stay looking at places in the south and south east of chch as there hasnt been much damaged oiver all in those areas.
Also busy as with work since the quake.

Hopefully they will spread the CBD out somewhat when they rebuild...i know if i was a bussiness owner i wouldnt want my place in there incase it happens again (which i probly will)

I moved up here 2 weeks pre Feb quake.... So hard being up here in Auckland watching my city be changed forever.

I flew down to help mates, crazy come back, so much different to me even helping out post Sept...

I think CHCH will suffer for the next 6-12 months and then boom... so much infrastructure work to be done.

As for the movement. Long term I don't think the CBD will move, its far to much the heart of the city. Short term alot of places will move, but i would expect in years to come a big push into the center with new buildings ect...

One other thing short term.... expect house prices to rise... happened after Sept 7. With people having trouble finding rentals and houses.

If I didn't get a job up here (Auckland) I don't think I would be leaving. But realistically its going to be many years before normality returns.

Hi All

I'll be staying put - no choice - old home in Sumner 100% financed & rented out - livable but in $10k-$100k damage - new place in Southshore also financed, livable but now also will be in the $10k-$100K damage - so although fiance & family are scared & would like to get outa town we have no choice atm - if we had no house ties it could be a different story.

Lucky really as have friends whose homes have been condemed =(

Building from the Sept quake won't be far away in some cases. Building from this one would be lucky to start this year, but who knows. I say move everyone out west. Only time I have been to the CBD was passing through for work, shopping at least has been dying off in town even before the quakes IMO. The quakes have just sealed its fate, it may come back, but will be on a smaller scale. I'm sure business will get back in there eventually. But building large quake safe buildings doesn't happen fast.

Gas fitter. Everyone wants their gas fires connected up yesterday after chimneys falling down.

I assume you mean west not east.... considering whats happened to the east side of town West is best, no signs of a quake, not many places in CHCH escaped the feb quake in comparison to the sept quake where only a small number of areas were affected.

Yes sorrt had my directiosn mixed up, I'm out in riccarton and seriously its not untill you hit the start of the 4 ave's that youd even know there had been a quake coming from the south.

We're staying put here, we're over in Wainoni area which got hit reaslnably hard, also mortgaged up to my eyeballs here. If people were thinking of moving out of town it wouldn't be that easy, especially with mortgages etc. We'll eventually have to shift to a bigger place but that won't be due to the quake, when we start having kids we'd want a bit of land also but that's not going to be happening for some time
