d2 coilovers - good or bad?

what does everyone think of the new model of D2 adustable coilovers/platform suspension/ whatever the technical name is (i didnt want to say adjustys)


i know the old purple ones had a really bad reputation for being cheap and crap but havent heard anything about the new ones

only reason im asking is theres a cheap set on trademe to suit an ae101

have some in my old starlet, found them to be excellant, had no need to upgrade to anything "better". They were the purple ones and every man and their dog say how rubbish and unreliable they are.

gave a very comfortable ride, a little on the hard side but i enjoyed it. I wouldnt hesitate to get d2s again

Also other suspension shops that dont sell d2s say they are not rebuildable etc but you can get replacement parts if needed.

They're great. I've had them in my car for close to a year and had no problems, handles well

I had to mod a set to fit an ae82 corolla.
The build quality looked pretty good. How well they perform on the race track is a diff story. Have known a few guys say they are not so great on the track.

For general everyday road use they will be sweet.

the ones i had in the SE104 seems to be of good construction but offer no difference in feel between soft and hard, hence i pulled them out and put some bazda ones in

you get what you pay for with most car parts. yes they are cheap and a 'coilover' and they have had to improve their quality a lot but when it comes down to it, you can't compare to quality brands such as TEIN, Koni etc.

good quality brands have their valving/spring rates suited to each vehicle which provides a better ride quality and better performance. i know which ones i would be spending my cash on.

oh and also saw a brochure last month from autolign and they were doing TEIN superstreets for ae101/111 for $1400 which is a pretty good price! might be worth looking into.

I had Tein Type HA's in my Levin ages ago.
I didnt like them, the ride was pretty rough, the spring rates were not as stiff as I run now. I guess their valving was super stiff to suit japanese race tracks that can be super smooth.

I find the ISC ones to be suited quite well to a track spec rolla.

HA's are their track spec version and yes valving would be pretty stiff for the road even if spring rates are about right/soft

superstreet is awesome for the road. perfect valving + spring rates for a pretty good ride and awesome handling. it really transformed the way my car handled and made it super stable!

but unless you go to a bilsten setup, there will always be that compromise between road/track as the superstreet valving is slightly on the soft side for serious track work.

i've heard of more broken/leaky D2's than all the other brands combined

and i believe the old supplier isnt any more so parts might be hard to get now.
their models seem to be better though, probably the same as ISC from what we can see of them so should be a lot better

apparantly the new ones are mint. a mate of mine is a supplier/dealer for them. will be banging a set of the "drift" ones in my 70 once the cash comes

Those were broken at Manfeild on ripple strips

end of the day you get what you pay for, I had a set of D2's in my AE85 and IMO they are crap, would have been better off with a decent spring and shock combo

So that photo example is like the mag wheel that was driven into a large pothole and blamed on the rim quality as it broke?

Buy a cheap set of coilovers and thrash them to death on a track then wonder why they can't handle the punishing ripple strips :lol:

Some people have an interesting idea on reality.

Funny that. Turns out if you use a product in a situation it's not designed for, it's likely to fail. Who'd have thought. Manfeild's ripple strips are huge - not a pleasant experience being on them.

Yeah funny that I think I still have a picture at home of the box that my D2 suspension came in and it stated on the Box for racing use only not to be used on public roads

So this fellow took his car to the track to use the suspension as it was supposed to be used and look at the end results
