Problem is F1 must change it's engine rules to avoid becoming a target for the greenies. Also to increase interest from manufactors. 4 cyl turbos with KERS type systems are where cars are headed, so F1 needs to lead the way. Otherwise it will become more irrelevant to the makers.
Being able to choose the number of cylinders is irrelevant because they will all go to 4cyl anyway due to size and packaging.

I don't think any team that wanted to win would do a V6, the advantage of having a narrow inline 4 is too great.
