WOF issues with TEMS

Postby Barks » Fri Mar 25, 2011 11:13 pm

The missus took our Ipsum to get a warrant (at VTNZ - bad choice, I know) and they failed her on the suspension.

It's a 2003 Ipsum with TEMS, and they won't give it a warrant because "The suspension isn't working" They can't tell us what's wrong, because they don't know. From what her indoors said, the shocks just aren't working - they sag when you jack up the car, but they are pretty much well solid when it's down.

Does the system work in some weird way that when the car isn't moving they firm right up?

Edit: Wife just told me it wasn't a VTNZ, just an independent WOF testing station - apologies to VTNZ for taking their name in vain (THIS time)

Just checked the warrant sheet, and all they've written is: All suspension travel, to comply

So really, what I think is that none of the guys doing the warrants know how the suspension works.

My wife did say that when they were checking the suspension the engine was off, so I imagine it goes back to a default setting where the valves are all closed and the suspension is rock solid - I'm going to see what it's like when the car's running tomorrow, my guess is that there will be travel once the TEMS compy has power running to it.

Yeah, go back and make them tell you exactly which rule in the VIRM they are failing you on.

My wife did say that when they were checking the suspension the engine was off, so I imagine it goes back to a default setting where the valves are all closed and the suspension is rock solid - I'm going to see what it's like when the car's running tomorrow, my guess is that there will be travel once the TEMS compy has power running to it.

That seems really unlikely, it would be very poor engineering to let a system do that. Imagine the lawsuits if somebody blew a fuse and all their suspension went rock hard mid corner and caused them to cross the centerline.

They probably explained the problem in "mechanic", and she probably listened in "woman"

I'm going to talk to the guys at Bob Batchelors tomorrow - the company I work for spend a metric ass-load with them, so hopefully they'll be helpful. I see your points about rock-soild suspension, and the mechanic-woman translator not working.

I thought about my closed-valve theory, and figured it was wrong due to the suspension sagging normally when the thing was jacked up - wouldn't do that if the shocks were locked up.

I remember my Trueno had solid suspension - to the point where I could bounce on the front corner and only have a tiny amount of deflection, mind you, it was running TRD struts and 450lb springs in a track set-up.....

YeMs - if you'd be kind enough to have a look PM me
