Equivalent for SAE 20 diesel oil?

Postby cat007 » Sun Apr 10, 2011 10:35 pm

Ok so maybe I don't know as much about oils as I thought I did

But the manual for my diesel boat motor says to use SAE 20 oil.

I can't find this anywhere. All I can find are things like 15W30 etc....

Is a SAE20 type oil just an old term or?

i think oils with numbers like that dont change viscosity with temp like regular oils do.

im fairly sure i was told to and used a sae30 mineral oil to run my motor in.

I know that in modern cars it can be very important, but i use to have a corolla with a 2E engine and the bearings were rooted, so i just put LS90 in it and it ran mint for ages

Dam - I think I've just put the wrong oil in haha - the manual says SAE20 and I think I used 15W30

I guess that means it'll be a bit thicker once it's up to temp.....?

Didn't it specify DIESEL and some API code like 'SF/CG', besides the thickness/viscosity???
Diesel stuff has some different additives & specs, I think that's the main point & be surprised if they didn't have that as a priority before the viscosity.

Most of oils these days have API diesel rating (eg.: read on the bottle of Magnatec).
