Can anyone help us identify this noise? It sounds like a vacuum leak.

Engine is a gen3 3S-GE transplanted into a 1990 NA Auto. Using all gen2 electrics and gen3 sensors :)

I've never heard a vacuum leak sound like that before,

I have heard an ST185 transmission sound like that though, not as obnoxious.

And what's with the engine bouncing around like that? Maybe that sound isn't the only thing wrong with it.

That noise is awful. Could a starter motor sound like that if it was stuck onto the flywheel?

Also why does it sound like a rotary?

The engine is only on 3 mounts.

Starter is OK, well clear of the 'flywheel'

Thats another thing it runs rough, but revs really easily...

Dont see how you could overtighten the cambelt on this motor, the tensioner is hydraulic. There was around 10mm deflection between the cam gears.

the pitch reaches a plateau, which suggests some kind of constant leak after a certain rpm. weird. wouldnt be a wastegate, i dont think? not a belt, tho i could be wrong i guess.

pcv valve?

bhg?

Interesting, this arvo, we found that by playing with the throttle body itself, we made the noise go away! We had a gasket made up for the TB, but its full of holes, has anyone got a picture of a stock gen3 3S-GE Throttle body gasket?
