Best Engine Sound

Postby Flannelman » Thu May 05, 2011 11:32 pm

There are so many engines out there. And all make a sound.

As every performance minded person knows, an engine is like an orchestra. Play the throttle and you are the conductor of the show.

Yet, who sounds the best?

Rotary, 4, 6 and 8 are the choices.

Post some actual sounds to swing the votes for your choice

Hmm, hard decision. Love the sound of my '26, yet not a fan of almost all other RBs.

On the otherhand, an 4.2 Audi V8 or BMW 4.9 V8 (E39 M5) sounds oooooooooooh so sweet :D

Gunna have to vote V8!

Edit: Heres a vid of an M5 with aftermarket mufflers - skip to 2:15 to hear it with the flaps open 8)

I think it depends on the specific engine. I don't think anything comes close to a BDA or well tuned 16V 4A but at the same time it's hard to beat an big cammed RB26 at 9000+ and an Audi 4.2 is a really sweet sound.

Voted 4 cyl regardless because I love BDA's

Yes, a BDA on full song is a sweet sound but if you were standing in the forests in the South Island in 1980 listening to the Mercedes V8's coming you'd have heard something really special.

Love the 2JZGTE sound.

If there was a V16 option then this would win hands down
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_q ... m+v16&aq=f

Lacking the best options, (16, 12, 10 more = win!!!) I voted 8
Some 4s sound sweet, BDA as mentioned! rotarys sound like arse :?

I appreciate any well built motor singing a merry 7500+ rpm tune.

a rotary is mint, a straight 6 with extractors is a sweet sound, a 4 cylinder pulling 8000rpm, a cammed 1UZFE at 8500rpm etc all sing a sweet tune.

the aussie V8 super cars sound mint, the NZ v8 tourers DONT.

If V10 was in there, that'd take it - it was a very very easy option not having 4cyl in there though between turbo 6 and ANY V8 was a bit of a hard one. I've found a pattern, if I am at an event with a bunch of angry turbo 6s and then hear a nuts V8 (ie, drifting) it makes me very very happy.... but then if I am at an event with heaps of angry V8s and then hear a nasty turbo 6 (ie, drags) then that also gives a special shiver up my spine.

I'm going to go with turbo 6s virtually at the flip of a coin, I guess I *own* a turbo 6 (RB25DET) and I absolutely love the way it sounds even after years of driving it and I can't bring myself to let it go... so am going to further develop it. A very nicely developed RB or 2JZ both sound completely amazing, slightly different equalities but still awesome.

I don't agree with RB26s being the only ones sounding good either, its easy to think so after all the rough as RB20s/RB25s running around but any of them played with right can be pretty sweet. Hell, even Buick V6s can sound impressive!

There arent enough options in the poll sadly.

I dont think anything can compare to a V10 revving to 21500rpm, it makes the hairs stand up on your neck.

But from the options given, Im going to have to side with a L6 2JZ 3.4 at 10,000rpm...serious business!! :)

No it doesn't. It makes your ear drums explode and beg for mercy
Especially if you are crossing the track in a corrugated iron tunnel with no ear plugs....

V10. Deal with it.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.
