Rebuilding celica P/S pump or get a new one?

Postby Townace » Sun May 15, 2011 2:00 pm

Powersteering pump developed a leak and was run dry for a while so I took it apart to see what the problem was.

The front seal looked shagged and where the main shaft runs through the housing its somehow managed to score the housing quite badly with deep grooves, the shaft still spins nicely though, would a new front seal fix it or is the chewed housing the problem.

EDIT: Tried to get a pic of the scoring but camera is crap

Can a new seal kit only be sourced from toyota?

edit: is there a trick to getting the front seal out or does it need to be pressed out?

http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_J_1996_T ... _4502.html for parts

Seal should just pop out. There is a pump gasket kit part number listed. Most places do them as a kit or all the individual seals are available. Aftermarket places like Saeco etc should be able to supply any o-rings that aren't available through the dealers

I've rebuilt a few and all of the seals are standard sizes from memory (Saeco or seal house in East Tamaki). However, if you have metal damage throw it away before it does more damage, rekitting it won't stop the wear.

Shouldn't be hard to find at the likes of pickapart.

I rebuild them as they seem to leak from the main housing o-ring.
