B6T flooding problem, ay ideas??

Postby Maxwedge » Sat May 14, 2011 10:36 pm

Hello, picked up a 1990 Ford Capri fitted with factory B6T motor for my wife- same as BFMR Mazda power plant. Used everyday its great, but if you leave for a week or so it floods itself with fuel to the point where its dripping out the exhaust, starts ok but runs rough until you give it a couple of blasts and 4-5 kms down the road later. It almost seems as though fuel is slowly dripping into the intake manifold or thereabouts whilst not using, any ideas appreciated?

If it's coming out the exhaust why no hydro lock on startup?
And what's it doing to the oil in the sump?

"but if you leave for a week or so it floods itself"
"fuel dripping out the exhaust"

thats quite strange/alarming on any efi motor.
all i can say with b6t's is that if you remove or have a screwd o2 sensor it does make it run mad rich if is stock/almost stock boost.
so maybe check thats sweet.
i had strange running rich problems once after replacing fuel filter as was given a BF5P filter :x

if its running a couple more pound that factory unplug the 2 white plugs close together at the centre of firewall if not already, that fuel cut does strange things.

Ideas??
What's the compression and is the 'runs rough' the only problem? Probably condensation & old plugs & wires.
It is not fuel dripping, that is not possible, so stop your ridiculous guessing and describe the symptom/s better & the age/condition of the ignition system.

Also, WHY DO PEOPLE CONTINUE TO REPLY TO 'EXHAUST DRIPPING FUEL' BS? Desire to prove that they're as clueless as the OP? :(

we do things a bit differently here in NZ my friend,
we listen and take on board what people say and try to help out from there.
not assume that they are some how lying and withholding information

"Probably condensation & old plugs & wires.

could be right, plugs could be worth a go for sure but i doubt its the issue alone. fuel dripping out exhaust can happen with them bud, screw up the high boost/large turb and you run it so rich with factory ecu it spits and drips fuel at idle. just trying the help the OP.

id be more worried about whats going on back home in Talahasee,
i read that the mayor and city government are under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for contract irregularities and public corruption? :?

Checking sparkplugs is always a good start.
If one injector was leaking , not that it would, then the associated sparkplug would be black after startup, or at least blacker than the others.

That removes most of the usual guesswork.

When I first got the car it did everything right. I decided to change the valve cover gasket as it was brittle and leaking oil, and paint it while I was there. After a week I put the cover back on and fired it up, it was missing and running like crap, lots of white/light blue smoke and a real fuel smell from the exhaust. Thinking maybe it was something I touched during the gasket change I thought nothing of it at the time. The following week without starting I went to go for a drive- same thing happened, missing, strong fuel smell from exhaust, smoke etc etc
I just fired it up 5 mins ago after sitting for two days, slight initial miss! i will leave it for a week again to see what happens.

This car has a damn intermittent problem still. One day fire it up its good, next day, rough as, stinks of fuel out the back and clouds of smoke for about 5 kms.
Is this a possible cold start problem- mechanical or ECU
The car has been stored and not really used for the last 10 years so now I am thinking the injectors have gummed up? One time when it smoked i quickly stopped it and checked the plugs, a couple were really wet as with fuel- might try again and double check if its the same plugs. But you would think that if it were the injectors it would do it everytime.

Could be an ignition problem.. if the spark isn't there to ignite the fuel it'll run like shit and smell really gassy out the exhaust. I would expect the gas to burn off tho, since the exhaust from the other cylinders should ignite it.

Either way, $15 on a bottle of injector cleaner from ripco/stupidcheapauto wouldn't be a bad idea.

Had one doing the same thing, after many many hours of testing and replacing stuff it ended up being a loose wire in the air flow meter plug

Should always be done, and usually isn't.

Determine if its missing on particular cylinder/s. If it misses at idle and you can pull a lead at a time to see if it changes how the engine idles. If its a certain cylinder or 2 then you should be able to track down the issue fairly easily

Checked the coolant temp sensor? Mazdas of that age are reasonably common for having the temp sensor fail and run rich enough they wont start from plug fouling. And ignitors for that matter, though usually more of an issue when hot
