What clutch to use for 5L-t 2wd hilux (ln85) ?

Postby AE85.6 » Thu May 19, 2011 4:03 pm

Starting to sense a tiny bit of slippage so I guess I better start to plan...

As far as I know all the 5L should be an 8 bolt flywheel not 6 like 2L ? and as long as the 5L was not from a 4x4 and was from newer 2wd hilux or a hiace it should be a solid type non not a dual mass flywheel (I hope solid).

Just not sure what to bolt back onto it though,
Have read lots of things saying the 5L ones are shyte weak and will die quick even on n/a 5L. Thought if the bolt and dowel spacing is the same between dual mass or solid flywheels can you use a 2LTe surf one maybe ? at least it is suited for a turbo granted though if it is only for 2400cc not 3000cc or is there anything else anyone can recommend ?

Obviously ute is no no race car and no big horse power from the lil diesel but I guess it has to suit the torque and last or be able to tow etc. Mite have a couple more horse than standard due to front mount and 3" exhaust but that's more for less egt's / reliability and preventing head going supernova, I still drive it like a diesel ute...

Current clutch was done by previous owner only a couple of years ago apparently so need something a lil better ?

Cheers.

If its only slipping when you engage it heavily or if the vehicle is hot and you change under load (long trip) then I wouldn't bother. Mines been 'slipping' for the last 3 years, and i'll still get another 20,000km out of it. Only time i'd replace a clutch is if I was either going on an epic adventure(tm) or if it slips under acceleration.

If it IS slipping when you put your foot down, and it's only a few years old, i'd say the clutch isn't set up properly, most likely it's not fully engaging.

But yea, the dual mass + the high 1st gear in those new wagons is nothing but a big $&#$% headache.

Cheers for that Quint,
It's not bad at the moment and can still drive perfectly fine but over 2k you have to accelerate a little slower. From stopped if I have the revs too high or let the clutch out to quick it will still bite hard and wheel spin if you push it but seems to loose clamp or bite higher in the revs, maybe 2-3k if you have your foot down it seems like the revs are climbing slightly quicker than speed is, if that makes sense...

a mate welded a S15 dual mass in his drift car and was sweet, obviously has it machined etc afterwards, worked out WAY cheaper than buying a replacment solid fly, maybe something to think about if it is dual mass

Didn't know that s15's used dual mass also, good to know about locking them, there are solid option available which I don't think go for too much. Mine should not have one, but not sure what motor was from so I guess I could wrong whenever it comes out.
