Tyre hit a Curb,rubber scraped!! Safe to drive?

Hi All, I recently noticed some damage to the sidewall of my tyre, seems it a curb, slight damage to Alloy but a piece from the sidewall of the tyre is missing Tyre still has plenty of life. Is it safe to drive like this? It is the passenger side front tyre. Please see picture -

That's fine as long as no canvas or steel belts are showing.

Also you might want to keep an eye on that feathering on the edge of your tyres, you might need a wheel alignment.

I'm no tyre pro, but that part is probably designed for people that can't drive.... uhhh I mean.... that have curbs randomly hit them out of nowhere :wink:

lol, I meant tyre hit a curb.

If you're looking for a definite answer, you won't get it.

IMO change it. I wouldn't drive on a tyre like that; not for long anyway. Make it your spare?

Thanks, wish I had a full size spare so I could make this one spare, there's a space saver in the boot. So, it is ok to have one tyre of different brand and tread pattern? I will look for a place to change it asap and maybe get the wheel alignment done too.

He should get a correct answer when one of the two in house tyre guru's spot this thread 8)

Not ideal to have mismatched tyres, but it won't make it undriveable or anything.

i did that too a couple sets ago on a set of Potenza RE001, same place, same story. I continued driving for another 15,000kms or so until the end of my tyre life.

You can't pass a WOF if the tyres are different like, directional with non directional or directional with asymmetrical, on the same axle etc.

So you can have different tyres as long as they are the same type, you can also have a different types on different axles eg: directional on rear and asymmetrical on front.

Also I would use that tyre for the rest of its life.

Geez, I thought I was rangi with this sort of thing.

Sure, you could keep driving on this and might be okay, or it might blow out when its loaded up. IE At the worst possible time.

If that sidewall strength is not compromised by the thickness of it being reduced that much, then logically the manufacturer would trim this out and save costs.

Clearly it would have made the tyre more prone to failure - there's no argument there. It's more whether in your opinion its enough to warrant replacing it.
