Ball joint issues . . . . . Grrrr

Postby CelicaGT8 » Sat Jul 09, 2011 11:00 pm

Ok, for my Celica project. Any one know what ball joint i need?

Image
This is a st162 Celica joint, its a terrible fit on the ae86 style knuckle

Image
This is a st191 caldina joint, its a better fit, but does not sit low enough on the taper.

Here is the knuckle against the mr2 sw20 hub, i does not line up, off by 3 or so mm
Is there another arm that will fit better?

This is the same setup on a 'was' 4wd caldina, im geussing that its the original ball joint, its got a simular arm and its all fitting, however im not sure if the joint is right in the taper.... maby its not?

you can measure the taper with some calipers and a bit of trig, say top hole in knuckle is 14mm and bottom of the hole is 18.5 and the distance between them is 16mm.

18.5-14= 4.5mm

taper angle(included)=ATan(4.5/16)=15.7°

you can do the same for the ball joint to see if they match.

I ended up making my own knuckles out of plate for my starlet.
i got the holes reamed to a taper by a local workshop(although they f*&%ed it up several times)
