Obviously you hadn't flushed it correctly.
A proper flush done the correct way will remove all that crap from radiator, heater and block.
However a badly corroded system will need disassembly and a proper cleaning done.
If you have a lot of gunk in the system sticking some flush through it and draining radiator is going to leave lots of gunk in places.

The way you do it may work for you and your newish well maintained car. But doing that on something else can cause issues.

My car's had cooling problems well before me,

unfortunately when I bought it, the place in the trademe ad where it stated "has been given 3 coolant flushes" when the guy had only owned it for 15,000kms didn't ring any alarm bells for me.. I was naieve and thought the guy was just genuinely keeping the car well maintained... turned out to be far from the case...

after owning it a few months the radiator toptank shot off, the thermostat seized, the radiator cap seal warped and the heater stopped working, every time i just flush the system, blast out the individual components, replace whatever i need to and burp the system ... then just carry on for the next few months till it happens again...

ive owned my car now from 130,000kms to 193,000kms... going strong at the moment, until next time...

anyhow, i think this stuff can apply to a toyota carina as they share the same components as a similar year toyota celica... they are both *T20* chassis and has as much in common as the toyota curren does to the celica.

As per the mechanic it is an electrical fault, when he gave me the quote he agreed that the heater problem will be solved and now doesn't seem to remember it. I think he hasn't done the job properly and I don't think he has even tried to fix the heater problem. All the hoses feel hot on touching but I have no idea how to to what everyone is telling. I will try to take it to the mechanic one more time tomorrow. He is MTA member that is what I looked at before giving him the job? Anyone has any other ideas or how to deal with this mechanic. Cheers

you dont need to throttle the outlet, as long as you have a good seal around the hose and a good volume of water flowing.

Its possible that he thought it was a blocked core or caused by the coolant issues, and that during your discussion he mentioned it should be fixed.
Start by being nice and asking him to explain what he now thinks the issue is. If you go in there and start ranting that he's ripping you off he will tell you where to go.

well in my experience, numerous times, its a waste of time, no heat.

has only given me heat when its fully pressurised out. then what comes out either looks like a whole bunch of mucus if ur using green shit, and bloody diarrhea if ur using the red shit.

otherwise if u dont pressurise it out, then water just flows across it u just end up with clear water out of it.

Just came back form the mechanic's place and spoke to him in the nicest possible manner, he was also nice and said the earlier problem had nothing to do with heater not working, that was water leak from engine, a gasket and a ring was replaced and coolant was put. This could be heater core problem or bigger. He says to flush the heater core, dashboard needs to be removed etc and he will have to look at it and charge again for the time and will find out only after spending some time. Any suggestions or anyone can point to a good reliable mechanic or wants to have a go themselves, I am happy to pay but can't afford much being a jobless student, it is very difficult without heater in the mornings, have to use hot water on the windscreen :(

Carm down guys, yea because replacing a gasket will fix a heater problem 8O

Dash wont have to come out unless there is a real problem with the core.

Take a hose off and see if water is flowing through it first, easy as hell to do.

MTA is a joke.

I haven't taken the hose off as the clips are too tight, don't wanna risk breaking something, have touched all the hoses and water seems to be flowing through and they all seem hot.

Where abouts are you located? I know a couple good mechanics out west auckland way who'll do a good job.

Alternatively if you feel like giving it a go yourself, it's fairly easy and there's bound to be loads of info on the net. Sounds like you couldn't make the problem worse, at least.
