Drivetrain Noises

Postby LEAKER » Fri Jul 15, 2011 9:18 pm

Ok so a few months ago i ripped of my outer cv joints andstripped one of my inner joints. I replaced one of the ball bearings as it managed to get a little rusty from lying around and degreased the inner joint and then greased it fully and replaced the boot. Put new cv joints on the outers and refitted the cv shafts. At the same time i fitted a new stub axle and wheel bearing. Now the car makes a strange noise like a $&#$% UJ but from the front. Could it be the new cv joints? They were pretty stiff when i got them and they're still quite stiff. It's not clicking like a rooted cv joint and it only does it under load although there is a very slight metalic sound when coasting. The car doesn't seem to have any issues with driving and it does make a bit of a noise when turning under light acceleration.
I've had the shafts out 5 times in the last 2 weeks.

With it all together have you tried spinning the front wheels with the car jacked up?
If you can hear the noise then you can isolate which side it is.
Try shaking the wheels back and forth, vertically, also.
Ive seen inner cvs cleaned up and put back and theyhave fallen apart before they could seat properly on the housing and that sounds like what you're describing. When I tried to spin that wheel it got real hard to turn at one point.

Though the metallic noise when coasting makes me think that there might be an issue with the bearing.

new front wheels bearing, new stubs.
I'm starting to think this may be a problem with the UJs. Has anyone got any top tis for diagnosing uj issues.
I think they're cheap enough to get so may just replace them but i prefer not to work that way.

its probably stupidly simple like the brake disc guard rubbing on the disc or similar from when u were working on the hubs, check simple things 1st.

also did u pack the inner and outer cv's with PLENTY of grease, can never have too much, have fixed plenty of inners with just packing them with more grease ;)

I checked the disks and everything. I have no doubt it will be a simple issue but after 2 weeks worth of messing around I've taken it down to the mechanics.
sometimes it's better for my mental health to pay someone else to do it ;)
