Why do you say the GTX gearbox is butter? Wouldn't it be the same box as the GTi?

Yep both have the exact same gearbox, only difference between the two is the GTX has leather interior v's cloth interior in a GTI.

But in saying that a guy at work has an auto Gti which has had no problems with the tranny in the 4 years hes owned it so go figure.

Is it a coincidence that one of the best selling and most popular cars in the world is only unreliable in a country with less people and cars than every major city in the world?

oh ok so she got wood trims too oh well ya never know what options those jappas get.

I have a feeling they are only unreliable here because of the imports that weren't serviced so well in their country of origin.

I see maybe 30 Golfs come through my door on a good week (not to mention another 30 other VW's) so I may be biased as most of them has problems, its also funny how most Vw owners dont want to spend the money on good servicing/genuine parts and usually want the factory to cough up for things even though thir car is a 10yr old Jap import lol.

Oh and they have the same problems all over the world just look at vw forums everywhere

Also if Karyn ever needs to replace the wood trims its best to replace them with Black equivalent as prices are around say $30 for black and $250 for wood for an ashtray cover.!!!!

In my experience, mechanics and parts sales people are the worst people to ask for opinions on cars. As a rule of thumb, we generally don't see cars that have no problems so our perspective may have a slight bias.

Ultimately though, a car's condition has much more to do with how it's been treated from day 1 than what kind of car it is. You can't blame a car for being unreliable when the owner is too much of a jew to get good quality parts and spend money on maintenance. If you really want an honest opinion on what these cars are like to own, ask people that own them. Anyone else will not be able to give you an accurate opinion as they only deal with one aspect of the car and don't get the full experience and associated costs.

I've maintained Karyns GTI since she got it and know that in spite of being a heavier, auto, turbo car chasing 200,000kms on a bigger engine - she still has better fuel economy than my daily Corolla and has lower servicing costs....and much nicer interior. Go figure.

Good to know, although unlike most wood trims the GTI one isn't a gawdy bright orangie colour its a darker brown so I don't notice it so much. The only thing I hate on my interior is the chrome plate around the shifter, kinda annoying when the sun hits it and shines straight in your eyes Maybe I shouldn't clean it when I clean the interior

Maybe I struck it lucky when I got mine as I haven't experienced anywhere near the issues people have listed here. My only major gripe was when the switch for the rear tail lights failed and I couldn't drive it until it was replaced. Having never experienced this before I thought crap the tranny has died, but no. $20 and about 30mins max it was fixed.

The MR2 I bought was a typical example of a poorly maintained vehicle before I got it. After I purchased it I went about doing all the usual maintenance, airfilter, oil filter, belts, idler, tensioner, waterpump et and the damn thing kept breaking down and one thing after another kept failing. It hadn't been maintained prior to me owing it, I went and maintained it and what do you know, it became unreliable (ok a typical MR2)

I disagree, one would have to assume that there are vast amounts more Japanese cars on the road vs Euro, and the larger proportion of major/expensive repairs seems to be on Euro stuff. I dont disagree that its to do with how the car has been serviced though.

Again, I disagree...most people are fairly one eyed when it comes to the vehicles they own, and tend to downplay any faults. Just take a look around any single marque forum

So the general consensus on Toyspeed is that no one can actually list a major problem with a Golf GTi that isn't down to maintenance/negligence, everyone has agreed that they cost as much as any other car to maintain, but everyone still recommends that no one should own one? Oh and I'm not being one eyed, I don't own one nor do I have any interest in changing that. Downplaying faults on cars I own, feel free to ask me my thoughts on MR2's

Had there been any major faults with my Golf I would have mentioned it. I mentioned the only issue I have had with mine being a minor reverse light switch failure, a common issue with all VAG auto's as they get older, but not a major when you know what's going on.

Like any piece of machinery, be it Toyota, VW, Mitsi, Subaru et, it all comes down to how it is treated from the time it leaves the factory. No one's able to predict how a second hand vehicle is going to perform when the potential buyer hasn't owned the vehicle from factory. Unfortunately the majority of vehicle owners worldwide don't believe in maintenance and think their vehicle with run forever as long as they keep filling the gas tank

Mums Mk3 was OKish, faults I can think of were reverse idler missing a tooth (apparently common), split in the intake so you would take off, it would take a big gulp of unmetered air and die, oh and i slammed it into the curb on a gritted road and bent some suspension parts

Cheers for the thoughts guys. Went to look at a nice Golf GTX today but unfortunately serious signs of sludge in the engine, and possibly BHG Definitely not looked after.

Mike: At the moment we're budgeting 8-10k and prefer an Auto as is predominantly my partners daily. Don't want to be spending too much more than the MX5 will sell for as we have better things to be doing with the money at this stage. A nice MKV would be awesome, but I suspect its closer to double our budget. Why do you say the GTX gearbox is butter? Wouldn't it be the same box as the GTi?

Phil: No Golf's around anymore, think there was a coupla months ago. There was also the Polo GTI which I drove, nice and peppy but not what we're after.

Avoid the Polo at all cost. They had a fleet of ex-rentals which were the bain of my existence while I was there. Had to fix up a couple of the heaps.

window regulators made out of plastic, which fail very often (majority of Golfs we had, would suddenly break window regulators after sitting for a while).
Coolant elbows out of plastic, falls to pieces.
Random electrical issues.
Dipstick tube: would disintegrate on touch because it is made out of cheap orange plastic (same applies to Audi).
Clutch pedal would fall down and never come back after car sat for a while (due to clutch cable seizing).
And that is with Japanese imports, we never dealt with Singapore cars...
