4AGTE bad throttle response after 2yr hibernation.

Postby ~SlideWays~ » Mon Aug 29, 2011 10:37 am

OK so my smallport 4age turbo has been locked up in the garage for over 2 years. Was running perfectly before parking it up, was started up everynow and then to make sure it was OK.

Recently started getting it ready to use again, had a rough idle so replaced the spark plugs and put some new fuel in it but didn't drive far until this Saturday.

I organised to drop off at a panel beaters to fix some 80's car cancer, and drove a good 20km, first thing I noticed was the throttle response was very sluggish.

At first I thought it was just a case of clearing out the cobwebs but it was still the same once I got to the panel beaters.

The car hauls ass like no tomorrow on boost, no misfires or flat spots. Its just the initial throttle response. i.e. if you tap the throttle in neutral it isn't an instant response.

Idle is fine.
IGN timing has not been touched.
Link ECU is getting 14.5v
Fresh fuel (but wasn't drained)
New spark plugs.
Oil is tastey golden.
K&N filter looks clean enough.
Fuel filter was replaced about 10,000km's ago with TGP.

Any suggestions?

Just had a thought, I wonder if the throttle body is sticking?

Could be, I had that with the KE when it sat in Taranaki for a while with no love, granted the KE is N/A & bluetop. However after pulling the throtle body apart found there was a build up of crap (for lack of a better term) causing the butterfly to stick.

Cleaned it out with brake clean / sandpaper & was much better after that.

Fingers crossed it is that simple, will give it a blast with some carb cleaner once it is back from the rust repairs.

Hope it isn't bad old fuel clogging everything, but would have thought it would struggle on boost if that was the case.

if it was bad fuel / clogging you would expect hesitation / farting across the board, plus starting would be a PITA as well.

Cross fingers for ya that it is just a sticking TB
