Best, Road, Ever...

Postby GTsedan » Mon Sep 05, 2011 4:33 pm

Went looking through the search engine for a thread and couldnt find one of everyones favorite driving roads (if I am too stupid to find it link it here).

If possible it would be good to see some of the more 'unknown' roads, and pics/google maps of the route would be awesome too.

A few of mine:

-Dunedin to Portobello return, there via Highcliff Rd and Portobello Rd on the way back

-Dunedin to Karitane, via Mt Cargill Rd and the Coast Rd

-Queenstown to Glenorchy

Image

-Motueka to Takaka "The Takaka Hill", just dont hit it when the campervans are going over.

Image

-Gore to Raes Junction via Tapanui on a nice day is also a surprisingly pleasing cruise.

10 pts to the first person who suggests the Para Paras

Yes Qtown to Glenorchy is a good road. Was crazy when it was still gravel. Not that I was old enough to drive on it then.

Dun>Waihola then back over Taieri Mouth is good for a blat and one I found a little while ago was Outram > George King Memorial Drive then back via Clacks Junction-Lee Stream Road.

I must have done the Portobello run about 300-400 times now

Westport to greymouth through past Punakaiki on a cloudless day... love it. That road is beautiful as well!
Actually so much nicer driving around the south island then the north imo.

If you want gravel, drive to Macraes via Bucklands Crossing (Ramrock Road).

Lived on the Coast road as a youngster (on Blueskin Bay, between Evansdale and Warrington) - absolutely love that area, had my first ever drive of the South Island in July and took a couple of the roads you describe there... downright awesome.

Hawea -> Haast was pretty sweet too, fun times with my first drive on real snow and some pretty sweet flowing roads.

Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Lone Kauri Rd is awesome. Its Left off the road that goes to Piha. It heads down to Karekare.

The section from A to Karekare via B is mostly single lane like this. So best drive the road A-B-C its a bit less dangerous. :)

Akatarawa road between Waikanae and Upper Hutt would be a great road if it was a rally stage. Most of it is 50kph limit and one lane so it's useless to drive on normally.

Good to see that road go to good use. Too many cyclists and camper vans.
