Hey guys

After a quick search there was just too much shit to try sort through, just want to know if you can change the registered owner of a vehicle if the vehicle has no wof and an expired rego?

De-reg'd or just expired? If not dereg'd put it on hold NOW because the back rego will be put to the debt collectors as soon as ownership is changed. If it has been out of reg for 12 months without being on hold then it will be de-reg'd and you won't be able to do a change of ownership. The buyer will need proof of ownership (receipt from you or similar) in order to re-register it.
If it is on hold or not de-reg'd then the process is the same as normal, no need for a WoF or reg to change ownership.

Thanks for that Callum. I've never put a rego on hold before how do I go about doing that? Doesn't seem all that straightforward by just visiting the VTNZ site

Just go to local testing station or post office and ask, do it at the same time as you change ownership.

Just a matter of filling in the forms and handing them over, should be no charge if you do it when changing ownership.

And the new owner can re-register at any time yeah? Not have to wait for the 3 months to be up?

Yep, but if they do it within 3 months, they have to backpay till the last time it was put on hold, eg: If you put it on hold in May for 3 months, then license it in July for a year, the year will start in May and not July.

Oh I see. So what happens If I just leave it unregistered? Will I be pinged with the 2 months or whatever it has been backpay when I change ownership?

Don't take this as the truth.... as you get different answers each time.... but I got told that if ownership is changed the new owner can change rego type straight away if they want. I never put it in to practise as the car I got never got back on the road

But that's what they told me years ago.

To answer the above, if you haven't put it on hold, you will have to pay full rego until the date you put it on hold. So if it expired 6 months ago, you already owe that much. So it's in your best interest to put it on hold.

I think I will just leave it unregistered and deal with any eventualities. Thank you all for help guys, it's a sad day to see the GT4 go but there's not much use for it when I'm skiing in France!

Leave it for 12 months and you're stuck with a car that is struck off the system.

And a bill for 12 months rego...

If you're the seller make sure you see the change of ownership receipt from the rego label printer, otherwise you are still liable for the rego until the new owner gets around to it.

And all the fines they rack up before ownership is changed. It can be done online too, so don't hand anything over until its done.

New owner only ever has to pay for the rego from the date on the change of ownership, so you're stuck with the bill up to then no matter what.

Unless things have changed, I've bought/sold enough unregistered cars myself :lol:

lol I bought a car off of a dealer that broke down in the first month, and he didn't change the ownership over to me as he had promised... I might have forgotten to change it over to my name for another nine months... :lol:
