Timing a 4a Carb Motor after new head gasket

Hiya all, did a bit of searching and couldn't find a thread to help noobs with timing their motors, hence the new thread.

In the process of fixing my AE82 Daily and after getting back the head and picking up the gaskets Im not too far off having it all back together... except one thing...

How do I get my engine timed? Completely lost.. I should have made markings when taking the head off, but being a noobie i did not. lol

I should be trying to get this all done next weekend so if there is anyone in palmerston north that could spare some time to help me I would be greatly appreciative! There will be beer involved!

I involved beer with setting timing once. Resulted in light wires draped over engine fan. Whirling vortex of wire, clamps and light until they all shot off. Recovered one battery clamp from 40m away and my mate recovered the light with his face :lol:

If you have rocker cover off get no4 valves rocking (exh closing, inlet opening) This sets no1 cylinder to TDC compression/power (valves closed). Timing marks on crank will be around TDC now. Set crank marks just before TDC. Fit dissy so rotor is facing No1 on cap and reluctor wheel is just passing post or if breaker distributor? points are just opening. Set leads in direction of rotation 1,3,4,2.

Timed.

Has this got a reluctor wheel or is this a breaker dizzy? Sorry for the total noob question

ok, points dissy. do you have a test lamp or multimeter?

The first task is to get no1 on Compression NOT Exhaust. You can also wind it over in bursts with no1 plug out and your finger over the hole LIGHTLY to bring it up on compression.

Dont have a multimeter or test lamp unfortunately. might know someone i can borrow a test lamp from, would that be ideal for doing this?

The engine is still in bits at this stage (ie the block is still in the car and the rest is sitting in my boot)

Going to have a crack at fitting it all back together next weekend so I can drive it to Wellington for the 27-28th.

So I should assemble everything, just not put the rocker cover back on and dizzy? is there anything special i need to do with the petrol pump? its driven by the cam (oldshool as!)

A test light is good, just lets you know when the points are opening so you can static time it to get running. With the lamp earthed and probe on (-) coil and ignition on, rotor facing No1 on cap, twist dissy AGAINST rotor rotation until the lamp comes 'on', this is when coil will fire (points just opening)...again just make sure rotor its facing no1 on the cap and no1 cylinder is on compression stroke as described above.

Yep leave r/c cover off then you can get no1 in right place to time up, with fuel pump just make sure the pump arm is sitting on the right side on the cam before you bolt it up, will be easy to see with r/c cover off...pretty straight forward.
