Ae101 brake upgrade

I was thinking of changing the brakes on my car. I have an ae101 corolla and was thinking of changing to levin twin pots.

What's required for this? I can't seem to find a straight answer from google. Is it bolt up? And will it interfere with the abs?

I'm changing the pads for the third time this year and thought I'd do this conversion with some race pads to get ready for further mods :D

Ive worked on this cars brakes and i cant figure out whats causing it to chew through brake pads.

Its not a track car, its just a bog standard auto 5 door liftback.

Have you used the same brand of pads everytime or does it chew through them regardless of brand?

Logical thought would be sticky caliper - have they been cleaned up?

I think the reason is a mixture of things. These are: Cheap pads, soft suspension and, of course, my driving.

The first pads were from repco. The next were slightly more expensive ones from pitstop. I have replacement suspension (d2 coilovers) but don't have money to get it certed.

As for my driving, I tend to head off on random long drives (normally instead of studying). I don't left foot brake, bar a few experiments, but not while on the accelerator.

How many kms do they last?

Just because the pads were more expensive from pitstop, doesn't make them better. Just makes them cost more.

I run toyota discs / pads in my levin and after a couple years ~20,000km they are still looking sweet as. Before that I had unknown pads from when it was imported and I left them in for ~40,000km.

That's not what i'd consider normal. Unless you drive like a maniac anyway. Can't say what the issue is from my comfy chair here though. But could be worth getting it looked at by someone with experience with brakes.

Changed the discs at all? Drums on rear? Only the front that you've had to change?

I'm no expert by any means, it just doesn't quite sound right. But i'm sure others will comment tomorrow.

Yea drums oon rear so only had to replace fronts. Done discs at same time, although woth second handers (not that it should really matter)

worn/sticky sliders, buggered rotors, shitty driving style.....

you can use SS twinpots, but you need to machine *cough*grinder*cough* a notch out, then ideally you want to use SS rotors machined down to the correct diameter otherwise you risk your pads falling out when you wear your pads and/or rotors down - and by the sounds of it, you do this often, so my personal opinion is to NOT go down this track

PS you will also need a cert for this.

as said above, I would get someone who knows what they are doing to look at your brakes, as they are what stops you - you dont want to go killing yourself or far far worse off, killing/injuring some other poor bastard(s)...


I should get off my high and mighty throne, but driving round an uncerted (and hence possibly unsafe) car is not a good idea......

i think what he meant was, he has the suspension but hasnt fitted it yet because he cant afford to get it certed

Upgrade from AE101 'large' rotors (158?x22?) to twinpots + machined down super-strut rotors (161?x25?).

Dont do it....

Not worth the price it costs + requires a cert.

I would get new front rotors (I'm guessing the old ones are well worn) and decent pads, bleed out the system fully and live with it.

so this corolla has ABS you say ... another reason I wouldnt be messing with the brakes and up-setting the bias.


Is the wear even left caliper to right caliper, is the wear even inside to outside caliper, like the others I'd be looking at sticking slides (caliper should be free floating) or a piston thats a little rusty.

Those should be 258mm and 262mm

I should have probably thought more before I posted that. I do have the money but would rather wait until I have done everything first. Maybe I should just redo the normal brakes first, then do the brakes at same time as other mods

The addition of coil overs will not assist with remedying the brake issue. If anything it'll make it worse by transferring more load to the brakes.

Corolla's have always been renowned for good brakes in standard trim and for road use you shouldn't need to upgrade. If you have an issue, and it does seem that you do, you will need to look elswhere.

As others have suggested, seek help.
