Plastic radiator inlet cracked :(

Postby Mr Ree » Wed Sep 21, 2011 2:38 pm

Hi all,
I recently bought a radiator from behind a 2JZ-GTE auto, to replace my skinny NA radiator...it had supposedly only done < 50,000 kms and was claimed to be in great condition.

Anyways, I got around to inspecting it closely yesterday, and it turns out the top tank inlet has corrosion formed on it, and it has actually cracked down the length of the pipe about an inch.

Ive had a good search trying to see what my options are and quite a lot of people suggested JB weld etc for repairing minor cracks. Am I dreaming? lol

Does anyone have any first hand experience with repairing these tanks? Or how much it cost them to have one replaced?

Cheers for any info.

Get in touch with Adrian (JJ). He split his when he put his PHR pipe on, if its the bit I'm thinking of...then again re-reading I may be completely wrong

Don't risk it ... take it into a radiator shop for a professional opinion and fix.

That was my initial thought anyway, google just sidetracked me into a brief episode of "cheap fix" delusion hehe

Will pop it down to victoria street in the morning :)

Thanks alot for that info Evil_Si..

Even though I originally wasnt planning on having to spend a penny on it before installing it, if I can get an essentially new radiator for another $70 odd, it will be a better option than having to buy a new one, or throwing it away.

No thanks, give me a rebuilt OEM item any day of the week over a cheaper end chinese core. Even half the name brand cores reputations are being slowly eroded.

If I had a bit of spare money to spend on the other hand, an ARC would be nice ;)

And I was quoted $140 for EG civic top tank. GT-Four has cost over $160 in past.

Very keen on $70 source!!

I will certainly be doing that :)

Im just going to take it to a radiator repair place in town first, to get an assessment of it. No point spending money on it if they think it needs more than a tank, given the prices listed in here already.

Hopefully the guy at adrad is in a good mood when I ring ;)

Worst case scenario, I cut my losses and just keep using my NA core, as it has held up fine so far. Might have to keep the boost down too though.
